So Im thinking about taking singing lessons but Im wicked nervous. I think I sound like crap when I sing. My boyfriend who is a musician and is in a band, thinks i sound fine and always says I sing in key. He keeps asking me to sing backup in his band but theres no way thats happening with my zero amount of confidence. He says everyone has the ability to sing good if they try...I think hes full of it :) Im just wondering if its possbile to sing good just from taking some lessons. I was in chorus all throughout highschool but whatever. Any advice? I dont want to sound like an ass in front of the teacher, I mean I dont want to suck and have him/her not tell me. plus im so very shy and hate being in front of people let alone be in front of people and have to speak or sing.....so i was thinking maybe this could help me out, whether I sing in my boyfriends band or not. ahhhhh I dont know what to do.

    Use a vocoder.

    Well, two ideas.
Get drunk enough to sing in public, but not too sloshed to sing, sing with the band and let the audience be your guide.

OR, record the band with you singing backup, record the same song with a different singer. Listen to the tapes and see what you think of your singing.

Just thought of a third, learn not to care if you are any good. If your BF wants you to sing with the band, look at it as a favor for him.

P.S. Enough echo & reverb will make anyone sound good. Or consider Tom Waits, Pete Seeger and Jerry Garcia, you don't need a good voice to be a good singer.

It uses your voice as the modulator wave and a synthasizer or guitar as the carier wave, therefore making your voice sing whatever note the instrument plays, and making your voice sound somewhat synthasized. Used a lot in electro-funk and house.

Some lessons can improve anyones technique, and that sure helps ability. The hardest part of not being a born singer is learning what you can do, and how to use what you have. Im not blessed with the smooth dulcet tones, but I make do with what I have.

Listen to some dylan, and then feel okay about using the voice you have! Folks like him are inspirations to those of us who arent always comfortable with our singing voices.

And hey, if you dont try, how will you know? Good luck!

hmmm, so in other words, don't try, let a machine do it? I don't think that helps her out too much man

if your boyfriend is willing to put you out in front of his band it's probably because he DOES think you have a good voice and you CAN sing in tune

lessons would surely help, but they might not even be neccessary, sounds more like a confidence thing

I think joining a choir would be more helpful then taking one on one lessons, because you can get used to making your voice work with others, which makes it much easier for you to feel at ease blending your voice with instrumentation

but ya, sounds like beneath all that uncertainty you already have a nice voice, so no worries

    peace

Honestly, the key to singing well is confidence. Someone can have the best voice in the world, but if they don't sing with confidence, they're not using their voice to its full potential. Just trust yourself and go with the flow. You'd be amazed at how much you're held back by telling yourself you're bad or too shy. Just relax and don't aim to impress anybody. Lessons do help, but my favorite source of practice has always been singing at home. Plain and simple. I play songs by artists who have a similar range to me and I sing them repeatedly, taking note of everything I'm not hitting. Then I keep repeating those challenging parts until I nail them. Remember that the voice is a muscle; the more you work it out, the more in shape it will remain and the stronger it becomes. Just lock yourself in your room, and sing your heart out. Sometimes singing in front of a mirror helps so that you can see what might be holding you back physically. Anyhow, just sing as often as you can and that will build your confidence. Go get 'em! Best of luck in your endeavors. :)

Go for it. At least by taking lessons you would learn the basics of singing, which is FAR more than the shit that many "singers" today know.
