yea, its not even the same genre anymore. i think the order should be old school (65-79) then hardcore (80-89) then when grunge got big it all died. in my oppinion nirvanna killed the punk scene. i like nirvanna but they got real commercial. i guess the new stuff is pop punk. its punk inspired pop music. i dont know
ALL MALL PUNK BANDS SHOULD DIE CHOKING ON MY OWN VOMIT! Yeah pretty harsh statement but they aint punk and their music sucz.
totally! Punk died in the early 80's. It was still thrashing about in the mid 80's but the life got sucked out of it when it became socially acceptable and all the rich kids were doing it because they thought it was cool. I knew it was good and dead when I actually heard a Butthole Surfers song on the radio in 1990. Now you even have Iggy Pop songs on TV commercials!! That proves that Punk was killed by the establishment. The music might still be around, but the meaning is gone. How many kids know why Bonzo went to Bitburg, and what that meant at the time?
Anti-Flag is great ^_^ But like everything urban kids that think the communist are "evil" cause daddy america said so got a hold of it I had a mohawk this summer when i went on a youth trip....after about 2 days people started shaving their heads to mohawks! Granted Me, Matt, and Chris got mohawks just to have fun! But as soon as we walked the beach and everything every youthgroup had like the "token mowhawk kid"... Its sad that something can be done for fun and people can ruin it for you! I went out and got purple hair dye and our youth pastor shaved his head to a mohawk but with little triangles making up the hawk! haha it was awesome! I'm reminded of a saying a little...Punk parable? I suppose A boy walks up to a "punk" and ask whats punk? The "punk" replied by kicking a trash can and saying "that's punk" So the boy walked over and kicked a diffrent trash can and goes "Thats punk?" The punk the replies with "No thats poser" lol funny
Old school to me is more original that new school punk. Like new school punk isn't even really punk. Like yah there are some really awesome bands who are actually punk like i found this band called Towers Of London and their more of an old school punk. I only heard one song of theirs though. But deffinitly old school punk for me.
white stripes kick ass I don't see what people have against them, that they are liked maybe? but back to the punk disvussion someone said punk died in the early 80s, there have been quite a few punk bands since then: Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Vandals, old Green Day was kinda punk, AntiFlag and Black Flag both suck but I would still consider them punk, etc. etc. there is some hope
ya, see, i know what you mean about the music. i love "punk" bands that have come out since "punk died" and i really dont think punk can totally die because if you make punk music, it should be considered punk regardless of the date in time it was made. i dont relly care about the white stripes, but that "doorbell" song is horrible! its like a really bad joke. its so bad its amusing. im gonna see anti-flag soon.
old school is the best... you cant really classify them as a certain time period though, because even some new punk bands that have only been around fro a max of 10 years still ahve the same agressive kickass sound that old school punk has. the problem is some bands liek green day, good charlot, simple plan are also concidered punk rock. i find this offensive, because they turned a political movement and lifestyle into just music. wheres the attitude! their missing the point. if you liek any of the bands mentioned above, they may have good music but i just dont think its right to concider them punk. punk is stuff like the dead kennedies, the exploited, the accused...
I also think that there is no new punk happening, the old original bands were true to the beginning. I was there in 77', 78' with my group "The Veggies" along side The Circle Jerk, the Germs, Fear, Agent Orange, The Alley Cats, X, Gaeza X & The Mommy Men and a host of others. We were fortunate to be a part of the new breed at the time and a whole new wave of things to come, yes I do think that there are a whole sort of great new bands but the word punk I feel has been played out. Peace In Music..
Dude! I don't recall ever seeing The Veggies, but I did see most of those others you mention. You ever play at the Metroplex in Atlanta? Even the Nucleus in Chattanooga had some great shows, for a tiny little hole in the wall dump. And there was the place in Nashville, had to go upstairs...can't remember what it was called. What they call punk now just ain't the same. Seems these new bands just don't get it, even if they can imitate the sound, they don't understand what punk really used to be.
There is no such thing as new school punk. That's what I like to call EMO music. It's just shit....it's not even worthy of being called music.
i agree it isnt true old school punk, but it isnt emo. blink 182 isnt emo... its just kindof new punk progression. they dont really ahev the true attitude anymore, but just label themselves punk because thats what most people see it as nowadays. with time deffinitions evolve... but i agree, i dont think newer punk bands with more emo sound to them should be called punk. its just a name though, so i guess it doesnt really matter. some "new school punk" music is actually ok, just missing the mentality
bands like leftover crack, choking victim, against me, casualties, antiflag, theyre within the past 15 years so i cant say theyre old punk, so uhh, what are they? but honestly? whats it matter? if you like the music, listen to it, who gives a shit what kind it is or what its labeled as.
