hey i recently watched a documentary called 'the corporation' and something kind of dawned on me. I don't really know how to say this but..it's kind of like this. Lets say a person wanted to expose a company who was breeching enviromental laws and they did this by handing out info sheets. That company would then just hire a board of lawyers to take that person to court or something for defamation. To me it kind of seems like there isn't such a thing as free speech. It's kind of weird how so much of what we see going on in the world is controlled and regulated. Anyway..what do you all think? peace p.s in fact there's a great example of how free speech is endangered in part two of the corporation.
I've been watching this too. I liked what Michael Moore had to say tonight. A nice expose of the lack of social responsibility on the part of corporations. When I took my first business course, and learned that the only thing business care about is maximizing profits, I realized I had to quit. How fucking shallow most business people's lives are... The pursuit of money is a social disease.
i have to agree skip, money pretty much the driving force in society today. I think that the time is coming that peoples desire for a better and fairer world will be the driving force!! Yeah, i like micheal moore. peace
FYI, those kind of suits are called "SLAPP" lawsuits. I think the acronym stands for "Stratigic Lawsuits Against Public Participation". The Texas Cattlemen's association filed one against Oprah. On one of her shows, she saw a film about slaughterhouses and said she would never eat another hamburger. There have been laws passed against SLAPP suits. The defendant can even receive damages. It still requires lawers. In 18th century England it was noted that anything was actionable if a jury could be found that agreed with the plantiff.
yeah thats a great book. with the new cameras being installed on street corners now it seems that much of that book is coming true.
Brunner's Shockwave Rider is also looking prophetic. I prefer that one because the good guys win in the end.
