    YEA IT'S FUCKING AWSOME!!!
Every set in that show is amazing. 72' is one of the best years the Dead ever had
    in my opinion.
    Nice choice man, nice choice.

proof that you still can buy a decent disc.
Ram Rod's son (who I met years later working sound for Steve Kimock) was born on that tour.

What I really like about it is that it has the best of both worlds, it's got both Pigpen's blues harp and B-3 organ, with Keith Godcheaux's piano. Even though they only got Billy Kruetzmann drumming, Pigpen still does a little tambourine and shaker on a couple tunes, which I'm sure makes up a little bit for Mickey Hart. I really wish they would've had Donna Jean Godcheaux sing on more songs though. They really didn't utilize her stunning voice for very much when she was with them.

I like live Dead more than studio Dead, and I think Steppin' Out is a really great example of their live experience.

Jack Straw on the first disc is probably my favorite Grateful Dead recording.

"Playing In The Band" on the first disc is the best version I've ever heard. They also do really well with "Sugaree" and "Deal" from Garcia's 1st solo album. Oh yeah, what did Bob Weir mean by really good Christians?

1972 dead kicks ass! I am also a big fan of Donna Jean, alot of people don't like her. and it blows my mind, because when her and jerry sang, oh it was sweet! and when her and bobby rocked out it was like fire! she was amazing with them.....though she is not an original member, i really feel some of the songs lost somthing in the later years...she really added somthing undefinable for me.......but in the end, i'm all about the jams....

The only things that's really flawed about Steppin' Out for me is 'Dark Star'. I'm more into the upbeat Live/Dead version, and I really don't like how they did it. It was basically just 31 minutes of 'Space' and the intro to 'The Wheel' with no going to the actual song, plus random interjections of the 'Dark Star' lyrics.

I know that the album is out-of-print now, but I found mine used but completely MINT condition at an FYE, which used to be known as The Wall. I know it's a corporate chain, but they did start out as record store, I think, in Chicago or some other major city. They do get some great used stuff, though.

Amen brother! It's totally the best of all Dead worlds and I'm glad I'm not the only one who digs Donna, most folks just dig on her.

she kicked ass.....and she was not there because of a threat by keith to leave the band......she played with Jerryy Garcia Band and Phil Lesh and Phriends....the band liked her. she is a super talented soulful woman....thats too bad you can't appreciate that......
