Maybe it's my imagination but I think that these two professions have more men that will in no way try to hide the fact that they are staring at me when I'm walking past or they are driving by. OK, they don't have the corner on the market but it just seems like they do it more. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the attention aside from once or twice when they were just kind of creepy about it. It has been amusing other times like when the driver was distracted & came close to an accident.

I'm not even a raving beauty IMHO. I consider it a good compliment if someone considers me average looking. So it isn't like they are mistaking me for a movie star or something. Have a look at my gallery, I think it more than proves the point.

Anyone have any theories about this?

    Well, let's see.

Guys who work in blue collar occupations are less likely to have been brainwashed by universities into thinking about "redefining masculinity" e.g. becoming an emasculated metrosexual.

These are guys who work where they do cause they can smoke on the job, put stickers with four letter words on em on their helmets, put up calendars of pinup girls up at work, etc.

Not the most likely candidates to be appreciating you for your mind.

It also explains why women are drawn to these men, too. Many of em could take on half a bar full of real estate professionals or IT workers.

That's the sort of culture they're in. If they don't objectify women, their peers will accuse them of being "fags". If they persist in not objectifying women, they will be harrassed and/or ostracised.

I once dated this one guy... He was an apprentice plumber -- not because of all the reasons Iron Goth would suggest, but because it is a fairly decent paying profession, doesn't require a college degree, and has more job security than many fields. Unfortunately for him, he liked to dress decent and be fairly clean. He wasn't wearing designer jeans to work, but he didn't let his ass crack hang out either. And, well, he was only 19, didn't have a girlfriend, and wasn't intersted in catching a disease or two from a string of one-nite-stands. So, of course, all the guys on the job gave him shit, calling him gay and whatnot. In time, he learned to act (while on the job) in ways that would shut them up...

Metrosexuals: In earlier times, we called them "Fops."

Also in the case of truckers, think about it: There's not too many women in the profession, most long-haul truckers don't have a partner (er, uh... DRIVING partner), so in some cases they probably get kinda a culture-shock when they come into contact with women. A few years ago I hitchhiked all over the country and at one point I rode for like 3 days with this cool trucker guy. He talked at length about how much he missed his family, and I didn't feel like he was being inappropriate, but he kept on apologizing for "staring" at me and said it was nice to have a female around ust to talkto and look at so that he didn't have to feel like an utter creep every time he left his truck. I guess it kinda turned down his sensitivity to seeing women. And knowing how he felt, I was totally comfortable with it the whole time.

I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth too much. I did mention that I enjoy the attention usually & actually there has been only about 2 times that I can remember that felt uncomfortable about it.

I do always feel flattered, that isn't a question at all. You are right, drumminmama, it's objectification. I know it's probably not politically correct but I am afraid that it is just a fact of life that men do this. The ones that we don't catch just aren't as blatant about it. That isn't to say what is going on in their heads (the big or little ones) :) It's I think part of the hardwiring that is instinctual like having a 6:1 waist to hip ration being considered more attractive. I have to admit when I know it's happening I will often put a little more sway into my walk or maybe but not as often toss my hair. I figure if they are putting that effort into looking they may as well have something worth looking at. ;)

I just have noticed it more around construction sites & by truck drivers. Plenty of guys in sporty looking cars seem to do this as do older guys in general, just not as much or maybe not as (I'm sorry for sounding like a broken record) blatantly.

I think that what Iron Goth, Dawn_sky, & Humblebee said pretty much is what it's about. I should have figured it out I suppose.

OK, so maybe I'm unusual but as I look through the guys I have dated on a regualar basis or had relationships I get a state assemblyman, a psychologist, a nightclub owner, a teacher, a chef, there has been a truck driver that I see often but we never have dated. More like we run into each other & have a few drinks, dance, & maybe play. We have only had actual sex twice in the twenty years I have known him. He isn't an over the road trucker though he drives truck for the city. He isn't the typical truck driver in quite a few ways. I don't know if the guys at work bother him or not but he would just laugh them off if they did. That is the kind of guy he is. I am attracted to him because of his traits that you may call metrosexual but I'm sure that he doesn't wear the things at work that he does when I see him out clubbing. He does keep his hair well groomed & I have never seen him with dirty hands. Not to say that all truck drivers do but that is kind of the thing that I think Iron Goth was implying. He is strong as have been all of the others I mentioned but none of them go out of their way to prove it. None of them would take on half a bar full of real estate professionals or IT workers. OK sure there is that feeling of being protected thing that comes from a man but I just don't see them seeing need to do this in a violent manner. I'm absolutely sure that appreciation of my mind has been part of the mix for all of them. They have said so.

I'm not saying that this isn't what the higher percentage of women feel it's just that it isn't allways what it's about.

    As posted by goth....

Ive two degrees yet I build new homes and none of the above described even comes close to me or my crew. Most know better than to even speak to a coustomer let alone do anything out of line to a stranger.

These are guys who work where they do cause they can smoke on the job, put stickers with four letter words on em on their helmets, put up calendars of pinup girls up at work, etc.

No one on my jobs smokes on the job, I dont even let them smoke ciggs unless its break time. And no ones says a foul word......cause they know it would be there last week with me.

Not the most likely candidates to be appreciating you for your mind.

Speak for yourself. At 50 it would take more than an aged body to get my attention.

It also explains why women are drawn to these men, too. Many of em could take on half a bar full of real estate professionals or IT workers.

Still not true, it would be the whole bar, these sorry fuck types might go to the gym four hours a week, try a 40 hour plus workout per week.

And HHB is right, any female above 50 who gets a sober mans attention should just simply love it, hell a blind man in a wheelchair who notices a 50 plus year old female should receive a metal.

I dig females around 40 the bad side is fifty isnt too far away.

Well, sonny. This aged woman isn't ready for the glue factory yet. Last summer I had an off Summer riding & I only got 2000 miles on my bicycle. Now maybe the women that you are running into are over the hill at 3 years your better but the majority of friends my age are quite fit with good bodies. I venture to say that many are possibly better looking than you without looking at you. Now, OK I hang with a group that are the majority cyclist so that is going to scew things a little. Maybe it's just the circle that you travel in.

Besides haven't you heard that with age comes expereince?

How rude of you to say such things. hippiehillbilly may have said similar thing but from the wording it sounded more like a compliment. Go sit in the corner & think about what you said, young man.

Not at all. I don't look at 15 year olds either. You are way to young for an adult partner. I'm glad that you are looking at people your own age. You are a good boy.
