i am at a loss. i am very intelligent. a bit of a slacker, but when something needs to be done, i work tirelessly. i master an essay, i bomb an exam, but it all ends up averaging as a B. i have friends and aquaintences who i know that i am much smarter than. i can predict what they are going to say very often, i'm much more articulate, much better at mental math. yet most are either B students or better. i'm sorry if i sound conceited here, but believe me that i would never degrade someone like this in real life. it's just something that i know, that i'm smarter than most people i know. Yet even when i work hard at something, it all comes back to the B. It's all very frustrating!
more articulate doesn't mean you say things the way teachers want you to. I'd still say kudos to you though, cuz a B grade is still darn good
I was a B student myself - nothing wrong with that. If a subject interested me and the instructor engaged me, I got an A. If not, I would do only what was necessary to get a C because I found things to be boring. I believe Brown University in RI operates entirely as Pass/Fail, which I think is the way it should be. A University should be obligated make sure you demonstrate enough command of the subject matter such that you can take a higher course - nothing more. If you choose to immerse yourself more than that, than that is a bonus for you.
Shit, there's nothing wrong with being a B student. When I was in high school, I was an F student for the entire time, until I started going to class stoned. Then I started getting straight A's and B's. Maybe it would work for you.
I'm not that intelligent, but I can get higher grades than others simply because I either know how to tackle an essay or prepare for test better than they do. Doesnt mean I'm smarter then them at all, I know I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed....far from. Grades are not a sign of intelligence, what you make of what you learn is and more often than not this cant be tested on an exam or essay.
I do understand the joy of getting a good grade though... I got an 85% in one of my classes last term and it just made me sooo freakin happy. Stats 2... and I only got 50% in stats 1 (2 is theoretically harder than 1, but it makes SO much more sense.... there's a purpose to it. I can do math great when I know the purpose behind it)
OMG Alex! I love the Golden Girls! I am a B student too. And I love whoever came up with university's are teaching you to be a zombie for the Establishment or whatever. Do you actually go to university? Im guessing you don't. The lecturers and the students are the most liberal, intelligent people you will find anywhere! I work my ass off too and Im happy with my B's coz it means Im doing the best I can. Most people dont get A's at univeristy. A B at uni is like getting an A at highschool.
well, i'm a C student...i fucked up my sophomore year, but i'm working on bringing it up...but i just hate being judged by my gpa, pisses me off.
hey gloria! How could anyone not love the golden girls! I have to agree, Im fucking pleased with getting B's at my university, its really tough to get A's.
I dunno about you, but going through school Ive never felt as if I was being trained to work at a target. Perhaps you feel that way because they knew what you were capable of as well. The point of going to school is not so that you can be taught how to be subordinate, but to futher your knowledge, so you are capable of doing more than having to wrok at a target. Grading is in no way a reward system, but a means of letting you and your instrustor track the progress of your learning, so you can improve where you need to.
school teaches you to be dependant? i guess you could look at it like that, but I see it more as teaching how to exist in a society. Why would I need to skin a racoon if i could go down the street to the guy who can cut up a cow? Why would I need to build shelter from the rain if I could have someone build me a house with running water and electricity? Why not specialize in one particular field and exchange your services in that field with other who have specialized in other fields instead of sitting in a damp tent eating a raccoon. Also, im sure you could go to school for those things. If not an established institute, then perhaps an individual who is willing to teach what they have learned about living in the wild. They may not grade you with As and Bs, but they will keep you informed on the progress of your studies, which is the point of grading
LOL! if we all were hunter/gatherers, hunting and skinning raccoons and living in log cabins, i think we would need a much smaller population. You can't sustain a hue population on this sort of subsistence. of course, if an event occured that necessitated a switch to foraging, very few would survive the physical rigors of such a life and only the competent will remain. i guess you are one of those "competent" few who knows how to skin raccoons and live in the wild? Admirable i must say, but i don't think any event is going to happen anytime soon that will make your skills useful. no, this world has plenty more mechanization to go through
I make straight A's. I take all the honors classes and enriched classes and last term I took a gifted class. Its 10:25 Pm and I haven't started my homework, and I'm tired.
Absolutely nothing is 100% sustainable, though the things you have listed will still be around in my life time. But if they were to become unavailable, and we were forced to live off the land, im sure that the group of people that I depend on, and who depend on me could easily convince you to stop hunting our raccoons. And thank you for repeating my point. The only difference between a grading scheme and a system without grades is that you think that getting an A is a reward. Its as much of a reward as a mentor saying 'good job'
