Let me see... I've been sewing for about 18 years now. Most of my sewing is for Renaissance garb, but I also make a lot of recycled denim items, and do sew some of my own clothing as well. If anyone has any great ideas for some "gypsy" tunics or patchwork skirts, I'd love to hear them. I've got a cabinet full of fabric & just about nothing to wear right now I also make my own beaded jewelry, and hand-dip candles, and have tried all sorts of other crafts. But that's what I do on a regular basis. I am planning on making my own soaps soon too though, as it's not supposed to be that different from candlemaking. Just wanted everyone to know, I am LOVING peeking around here & seeing what everyone else is making! It's so inspiring!!! love, mom
welcome Marcy! you have looked at hippie patchwork, right? lots of mamas with good eyes on here. Some papas, too! the Gypsy tunics are modified chemises. You have Elizabethan Costuming?
Yup, I sew just about everything. Some of my favorite skirts are from a sweet little shop that's (sigh) closed now. They're tiedyed sarongs, but they've got a tassel-ey band to tie them on. I'm hoping to combine a 9-gore pattern with some patchwork for a few new skirts. I smocked a dress for my daughter's 1st birthday, and was thinking of doing some simple smocking on a tunic... kind of like those cute little tube-tops that were so fun when I was a li'l one. But I really like the over-full sleeves too, so I'm still working on a pattern. I'm thinking of getting a few "real" patterns, and modifying from there. Most of my garb is mid-16th century Highland dress, and a Celtic/peasant mix from the mid-15th century. Did you see the ones I did for our Vow Renewal? (the colors are actually more like in the pic of DD... stupid fluorescent lights!)
Oh wow...your vow renewal pictures are breathtaking. If I had a working sewing machine right now, I'd be working on my wedding dress, but alas, I do not. I've got an outdoors, hippie sort of theme in mind. Did you also make the flower wreaths for your headdresses? How did you do that? I made one for myself out of a metal ring I bought at Wal-Mart wrapped in little artificial sunflowers, but it's not very comfortable. I plan on making a wreath of purple flowers (I'm not sure what type yet, though, I'll have to go hunting at craft stores) with three flowing strips of a purple gauze material as my veil. I love your pictures, though, and that was my main point of commenting, hehe.
those are great pictures. your husband reminds me strongly of my son, haha. where do you live? i'm a rennie too, and i go to pennsic. i belong to a celtic group.
Just to keep this clear, rennies are the traveling workers of faire circuit and they are rarely, if ever, active SCAdians. No rennie with any pride would put themselves in a situation to be at a nSCA event. We try to sell 'em and get their anal-retentive blabbermouths out of our booth. dm spotty 7-year Rennie texas/ southern circuit. but Marcy, my question was do you own the book Elizabethan Costuming by the Living History Center (Southern cal show owners at one time)
