    Anyone into that band?

I really love them so much! Their music is so great, I've heard Birds Of Fire and it really is genius music. I really wanna get more albums, which ones do you advise?

I liked them a bit when I first started listening to them, but I found them to get old kind of quick. They are a little too "prog" sounding for me. I just can't get into music where the primary goal of the group is to play as fast as they can without missing a chord. It just sounds kind of vapid after repeat listens.

I am a big fan of John McLaughlin's solo work, though.

    I really like John McLaughlin!

It's true that sometimes, prog can get a bit too complex and then you start wondering where the melody went, but what I've heard so far from The Mahavishnu Orchestra I really love. In general I really like jazz fusion

I've only heard "Inner Mounting Flame", it was the album I was told to check out if I wanted to hear some quality jazz fusion. Probably wouldn't of popped it in that genre myself, but that's besides the point!

I really like it, seems I'm less and less in the mood for 60/70's rock music everyday. Crazy I know. But Mahavishnu always go down a treat when the urge is there.

I'll have to examine some of John's solo stuff I'm sure.
To me it's just like one big jam, I quite enjoy just sitting and playing along with it without exactly absorbing what's on offer. Which must be a good thing...That I like it after such little effort put in to 'hearing' it.

I have Between Nothingness & Eternity. It's a live album and it's awesome. I get lost listening to it. Mclaughlin's awesome, but the drummer's independant work is insane. Billy Cobham. He did an album called Spectrum that's unbelievable. And like McLaughlin he was on Bitches Brew with Miles.

I don't know fusion that well, so MO sounds really out there to me. But I still love what I've heard of their music, I have Vision of the Emerald Beyond.

My US history teacher saw them and Led Zeppelin play together in a concert way back when. It was great...or so I'm told.

If you really like fusion, you should try Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever. It's not as heavy as Mahavishnu though.

If you like McLaughlin's guitar playing, you have to listen to Bitches Brew, by Miles Davis. This is IMO the essential fussion album, and McLaughlin plays some incredible guitar here.

Finally, there's Live in San Francisco, where McLaughlin joins forces with Al Di Meola (the guitarrist for Return to Forever) and Flamenco Grand Master Paco de Lucia. The three of them play accoustic guitars, and you will not believe what you're hearing.
