I love the idea and concept of communal living. I lived in a semi-commune for a year or so. The idea was great-it simply didn't work due to people's selfishness and need for control. There truly has to be a balance of control and understanding of all involved to make it work. I hope one day to have my own communal family of peace, love, and understanding. BINGO........you nailed the answer why most communes didn't work on your first try .....lol....kudos to you
Communes dont work due to the rule of humans. If too many congregate then a critical mass occurs where people become pains in the asses, lazy ass folks want to join the commune cause they cant cut it so they lounge at others expenses. etc.. and the whole thing falls like a deck of cards.
well i dont know so much about the love thing. i think its just more respect for others than love. like here wanda is into wicca and a nudist. i like her and her kids just fine and all is well havent had a problem in a year with her around but i cant say i love her. maybe its just the defanetion of the word thats messing me up. and the boss is right lazy people mess things up. they come and expect everybody else to do the work and just leach off the rest. is why we try to stay family oriented people have more to worry about than just themselves when children are involved. like feeding them getting them to school clothing bathing and on and on. say you got a 21 yr freeloader laying around not working or helping who is there to pester them to get a move on it? but you got a family there and a person is lazy you got kids tugging at you wanting stuff like wanting to be fed.
I would love to live on a commune and have even thought about starting one. I think the idea is great if you can get people there who would live well together.
I think communes work if everybody has an aim in which they are striving for, so everybodies action are toward or in the good of this objective. Quite a few groups seem to be setup simply to lead a green, farming or eco-existance, and although this is a tall and demanding task in itself I don't think it's enough on it's own to gell together a fairly loose or broad group on it's own? When you have a fairly free and open community where people can come and go as they please it seems to me people don't have to be committed by default... on the other hand if people have poured their all into a project then these tend to be stronger players?
I think a commune would work better if #1 everyone involved has an equal investment in the property. ie: shareholders/incorporate. so they are not working someone elses land. Give them the option to sell out their share back to the commune landowners. #2 avoid hard-drug users, (addicts of heroin,cocaine,crank,skank,cat,etc..) are bad news. #3 avoid underage folks without a legal guardian. This can bring legal problems and you might be housing a runaway. #4 ID/Background checks. yes do you want a felon amongst the group (ie violent offender, escaped convict etc..) Ask for ID and background check is a must. #5 Theme, ie Artists commune etc.. a commune of like minded folks will work better. #6 democracy, everyone should be able to vote and work together. #7 A trial period, then the commune members vote on either this person staying or the person leaving due to compatability problems (ie a loafer, backstabber, etc..) And limit the size. There is a point of diminishing returns.
i would like to live in a commune but i dont really know what it is all about can anyone tell me what it is like to live in a commune
If you want to try it out, stay at a hostel for a few days. It is not the same but it will give you a similar experience.
