Keep your store uncompromised. Don't ever have signs saying your products "are for tobacco use" or "we don't encourage the use of marijuana". That is totally wussy and hypocritical. If you are that gutless, go into another business. No-one will respect you if you compromise like that.
Y'aint gonna make much with it. Most people who hang around there are gonna be jobless scroungers and potheads who want stuff for free. Harsh, but still.
Pothead or not everyone always wants something for free, you have to realize the people who run head shops arent in it for the money they are in it for the atmosphere in which your in all the time. Picture it like this you could work in a huge corporation with people above you lashing out orders at you day in and day out never giving you the respect you deserve, sure you may be making the big bucks and have good benefits but are you really happy? Chances are your probably not, you wish you had a better job, a real life and less stress from work. The way I see it is you have yourself a nice little shop you set up yourself, you have no boss, you set your own hours, it's not extremely difficult and stressful, and you make enough money to atleast be satisfied because your able to get by. And finally the people are what make that type of place worth having. What are hippies, I know myself and friends of mine whom consider ourselves hippies are fun loving, easy going, can talk to anyone about anything no matter where you are and who your with, they are relatively happy all the time, and so on. Now why not be around people like this all your life, I think I would be happier doing this compared to working a big industry with ass's all day long.
Sell something people need instead of Grateful Dead t-shirts and bongs? Seriously though, there isn't much skrill in retail. My advice is to find somewhere where there isn't a head shop in town, then you'll win by default.
How about a head shop/record store/cloths store/used stuff store/food store, kind of a one stop shop thing. Like Mall-Wart but cool and not evil.
well it doesnt do anyone any good if you store gets shut down. and its not like people wont know it can be used for toking.
