Seriously, for as long as I can remember, I've had to explain the difference between Chanukah and Christmas to ignorant dolts who don't want to learn anyway. In a nutshell the scenario is: Chanukah= Bloody 3 year Jewish insurgency against Assaryia, no gifts. Christmas= Birthday for Jewish guy who saves the world. lots of gifts. So that's it, if anyone EVER asks me to explain it to them after this, I'll simply refer them to this thread.

You must be part of the only family I've ever known of- including my own and the rather huge Jewish population in my area- that doesn't give presents on Chanukkah.

Actualy, you can give a small gift, but what I'm talking about the people who get eight gifts! The only reason that happens, is due to the blending of Christmas and Chaunukah

Well, that's kind of true- the only reason we give presents at all is because of the influence of Christmas- and my parents both grew up in Christian families and then converted when my brother was born, which might have something to do with us getting presents most nights. I guess it depends on who practices it. My family- and most of our friends- are reform, so we don't worry about it as much.

I could have sworn that hannukah was a celebration of the miracle of light, because the only oil they had burned for 8 nights after the destruction of the temple.

but I was raised in a reform temple, so I got torah light [IMG]
