new puppy conundrum

my wife and I just rescued an older puupy..we are not vegen or vegetarian BUT we dont believe in supporting factory farming only buy organic and attempt to buy only locally grown and produced goods..so the conundrum is what to feed out new family member as ALL coomercial pet food even that labeled as organic isnt as a matter of fact Ive read that very soon pet food will NOT be able to be labeled organic...we dont eat very much meat maybe once a week...and dont know any organic butchers so we cant even get bones for her to chew on .......anybody faced dealt with similiar?

 

Maby the dog isn't a vegaterian. Actually dogs are naturally carnavores.

i suppose if you're going to give the dog bones then, whether they're bones from something organically cared for or not, they're still going to be bones...the animal still died...

there are vegan dogs in the world but of course they are vegan b/c they depend on their caregivers to feed them. i've heard that the oldest living dog is a vegan and ive also heard that it *can* be healthy but i havent looked too much into it myself. im vegan but both of my dogs are not. they are picky eaters to begin with.....i dont feed them commercial dog food (gross) but i do feed them canned and dry meat based dog food...a brand called NutroMax Natural Choice. No byproducts...of course that doesnt help you if you are looking to boycott the meat industry...i feel awful about buying meat based food for them sometimes but its what they evolved to eat so i gotta do what i gotta do...i do the best with what im given as i cant afford to buy organic all the time for them...i spend almost $50 a week on their food as it is.

Well, the good thing about it is that dogs usually recycle thier food a few times.

 

I feed my dogs Nature's Variety. Just email companies and ask where they get their meat from. Look for human grade, no factory farming, no AB use, etc.

Don't expect crap like Eukanuba or Purina or Iams to have humanely raised meat. Look for good dog food brands(no corn, no by products, meat as 1st ingredient)-

Wellness
Innova
Canidae
Nature's Variety

etc..

 

I used to have snakes and fed them whole, frozen rodents. Several of the companies I used also sold dog food which consisted of ground rabbit. Yes, its still animal, but its raised on smaller farms and is pure whole animal, meaning the whole rabbit was ground up making it more like what a dog would eat if it hunted itself. it comes frozen in those plastic wrapper things ground beef comes in.

It not cheap, but if its important to you, its a good option.

This confuses me. Just because an animal was fed organic food doesn't mean it wasn't caged and then killed. Do you mean non-farm factory petfood?

Someone once told me this interesting analogy about "organic" meat- It's like buying a woman really great organic dinner before date raping her.

 

what is the deal with that, organic meats??? are the requirements just that their fed an organic diet and not injected with growth hormones+antibiotics, or is some freedom a requirement too? i feed my cat organic chicken and newmans as well with dried food =/ never cows or pigs cuz i know their the worst to be eating health-wise, and coincedentally the hardest on the environment...

btw, dogs make good vegetarians, the oldest dog alive is vegan...

It is a legally defined standard;

There is a registered, documented and inspected trail from "farm gate to dinner plate"

It operates to the very highest levels of animal welfare;

No routine drugs, growth promoters, animal offal or any other additives fed to animals (sick animals may of course he treated);

At least 70% of animal feed must he grown to organic standards;

No use of artificial fertilisers or pesticides on feed crops or grass

No use of Genetically Modified Organisms.

 

Karma dog food uses free range organic chicken, and organic everything else. The only thing I don't like is it's heavy in grains and there's only 1 meat ingredient in the first 3. I'm a vegetarian, but don't expect my dogs to be.

 

an organic butcher.............wow. i dont think that exists. dogs cant eat tofu. why the hell would you feed animals on a vegitrarian diet? thats not fair to them. why not just starve them?

 

dogs make wonderful vegetarians, cats are a different story i think. dogs even make good vegans, the oldest one alive is vegan, ive even heard of a dog going raw vegan. if they sell vegetarian dog food in a mainstream grocery store here, i think it is pretty safe to turn a dog veg, and id bet there a lot healthier and happier for it too

 

i still dont think vegitarianism is smart. eating meat is healthy, no matter what anyone says.

 

so vegetarians are dumb?? eating antibiotics,hormones,pesticide residue and shit is good??
