To all you older hippies out there, what would you say are the main differences between the average 20 something living today and someone of the same age living back in 1970? Society has obviously changed a lot according to the media and what people have said. Would you say it was better to be young back then, or do you have mixed views? I'd be interested to know be it general or personal.
in 1970 our age group outnumbered those who were the age we are now. that gave us a certain amount of collective power with which a great deal of good was actualy accompleshed. mostly by those of us who didn't act or look the way other people thought we 'should'. there was certainly a feeling of hope and possibilities. personaly i didn't really notice people all that much like what you're asking. what i noticed then and what i notice now is more the larger picture sort of thing. media always rewrites history. just like it was doing then. if you believe the sanitized versions they feed you they'd have us all believing revolutions are won by polished shoes and pinstripe suits. that the same long haired dirty freeks they ridiculed weren't the freedom riders who went to jail for civil rights and so on. people are always a cross section and every individual has an agenda of their own. main thing i think is that the demographic was younger and that was how we (the collective we) were able to do the things we did. but if there had kept being that demographic we'd be even more knee deep in each other then we are now.
Freedom and things were a hell of a lot cheaper. but in general material things did not mean much to us unless it was a high end home stereo system . or a fancy motocross bike or street bike. those who own those were consider the Hood Gods. i had 2 of the 3 but i did manage to own a nice stereo a bit later "still in the 70s" a Kenwood reciver. social wise it was much better. mangling with difrent ages was no big deal. drugs were cheap and so were rock concert "around $5 thru $ 7.50 a full lunch at BK or MCdee under $3.00 ,gas about 65 cent for premium . if you manage to get busted a slapon the wrist. cops did harrass us but they knew we really were harmless "angels compare to today kids".
I forgot the streets were not congested with vehicles . "or cops".. helicopters only if a plane had crash. people in general minded theyr own bissnes and you did not have a crime watch "assholes with nothing better to do than to report anything to the cops" including your lawn or house walls colors.
The 70s were not that Hip! they were good i think you prob meant the 60s but the 1970s was the time we enjoy after the 60s strugles and battles . "another word the dust have settle down" by the time Raygun left office we were in route to a police state again. The rest is history. i feel horrible for this generation outlook. "still try to make the best of it" and dont trust uncle sam. ......not 1 bit. stay vigilant.
