ebay is considering selling live animals. I think this is a terrible idea, for many reasons. please go to the discussion and tell them this is a bad idea!

    Dear Pets Community Members-

We are hoping to launch a Live Pets Classified Format early next year. The listings would not be transactional and there would only be a listing fee. We are also looking into allowing non-profit animal shelters to list animals for adoption for free.

I would love to know what our active community members think about this new category. We are also considering Pet Services in this format as well - grooming, walking, etc..

Please feel free to reply to this thread or email me directly at pretz@ebay.com

    Thanks!

hmmmm....im torn. listing needy animals from shelters *could* be a decent thing just as petfinder does........

however selling animals for profit from breeders and/or pet shops is horrible and i would totally be against that. animals arent *items* and shouldnt be listed as such on ebay.....but the shelter animals is a different scenario.....petfinder is my all time favorite website.

Just skimming through the 26 pages of comments will give you some reasons....
because there is no way ebay can do a detailed check of where these animals are coming from..this will be a great place for backyard breeders to get rid of animals. Also, how could an honest seller be absolutely sure where their animal is ending up? Lots of free animals end up being breeders, unnecessary food, or lab test subjects.
There are plenty of credible online rescue sites, this is just another way for ebay to monopolize and make a buck or two. http://www.petfinder.com/
Just skimming through the 26 pages of comments will give you an idea....

I think they should go with live slaves. I understand that used to be a very profitable product to market (and still is). They can be packed about 200 to a container car I think. I imagine the auctions will be fun to watch!

i'm pretty sure the NZ version of ebay (trademe) trades live animals...there were some chickens on there the other day anyway.

they have strict saftey rules and ethical targets to go by though.

How would animals be "shipped"? I don't get it.

animals can be shipped in crates via the airway system and then be picked up at the airport.
