Santana is great. I would say he's better than Jimi Hendrix, alot better. But it's also my opinion that beating a stray cat with a banjo sounds better than Hendrix's music, so who can say?

he's obviously a good guitarist but he hasnt put out a good album since the early 70s, he's very overrated.
the last three albums he's released have been especially bad.

Santana back in the day was perfect. He had his band which was the shit. He didnt have his pop image and he didnt have his old age.

The band was one of the greatest jam bands of all time. They found the universal vibe which all jam bands strive to find through their latin beats style. They created something new with their intricate jams and Carlos lead the way.

i agree with soulrebel51 he hasn't put out a good album since the early 70's, and his latest albums haven't even really been the band Santana. it's mostly him on guitar while some of todays more popular artists do the rest. but he's still amazing.

Carlos Santana is great but a comparison to Hendrix is a bit much, I am sure that Carlos himself would agree for the fact that Hendrix was his guitar idol so to speak. I am a big Carlos fan and think that he is the most spiritual guitarist ever and one of the influencial musicians of our time, I played with his brother Jorge and he speaks of Carlos as a reserved person that does not see the praise. He says Carlos thinks of himself as a messenger of music to the people which is beautiful. For the persons that say Carlos has not put anything out good since the 70's I was also one of those that thought that but when you know the whole story you understand. To be here playing all these years and have done all you can do in music you want to explore other ways and he did by his last 3 album with guest artis jamming with him and recording, Othere great artist have done this why not him. For years Carlos had been passed up on awards and radio play (except for the old Black Magic Woman and such, and if any of you know Radio play is where you get heard and make your money. Now he does make his money from concerts but to go out on 6 months to 8 of the year takes its toll on you so yeah maybe he did get a bit commercial on his last stuff and he also made a lot of artist known too and got there career going. He is still one of the greatest guitarist ever and done just about everything a musician can with his gift, a very charitable person to victims aid and so on. There is a cd called 'Abraxas Pool' the band which was a try to get Carlos back with the orginal members but he did not want to participate. It rocks though and it is a collectors item. Gregg Rolie, Michael Shrieve, Chepito, Mike Carabello, and Neal Schon. The only one missing was Dave Brown the bass player because of poor health, this is and rocks just like the orginal Santana band so please try to find this cd. Peace In Music..

'Abraxas' is a classic. Carlos Santana was brilliant (not anymore - too commercial.) I mean, who else could mix up all those styles - latino, jazz, blues, rock, psychedelia - and pull it off so spectacularly?

But to compare him to Hendrix is just ridiculous. I mean, Santana's great, but Hendrix was a wizard. Santana's more on the level of guitarists like Mark Knopfler and B.B. King. Hendrix has only ever been challenged as The Greatest Guitarist Of All Time by one man - Stevie Ray Vaughan.

I find no problem with comparing Carlos to Jimi, in fact, I find it a good comparison, and I like Carlos better than I do Jimi. Just my opinion. I once made another similar comparison on another forum, Carlos vs Clapton after listening to the 23 minute long song that they jam on together entitled Eyesight to the Blind/Why Does Love Have to be so Sad. Again, I think Santana comes out on top, and again, just my opinion. Carlos has such a melodic way of playing, and he doesnt miss a note. I have seen him live several times, and he is in the top 10 of all shows I have seen, and I have seen many.
