I always go barefoot and wearing shoes at work is UNBEARABLE! I had to buy arch supports and they help but I have pressure blisters on my feet that won't heal. The minute I'm off work I remove my shoes and socks and walk out the door. I wish I didn't have to wear shoes period. Gah!!!

Maybe you could explain this to your manager and try to come to some compromise with them and explain that if you are allowed to take your shoes off at practical times of the day then it would mean youd work more efficiently and thats what the boss would want and youd think that even if they couldnt let you go barefoot all the time they could at least come to some compromise with you or maybe even give you a suggestion as to what you should do about your feet. I just feel its a good idea to at least know how your manager feels about such things at work and ensure they understand your situation.

Same here love being barefoot and often kick off my shoes for my walk to the car after work.
    atleast
In a business casually work enviroment it is perfectly acceptable for females to wear open toe sandals, so in the summer months females have more opportunities for their feet to be comfortable.

Men wearing open toe sandals in the work place is still not accepted.

If youre working at a business where you do a desk job and if your feet are under the desk you could always kick off your sandals until you hear someone coming up behind you and then just slip them on if you think they canseeyour feet, although it seems kinda dumb that theyd care what you wore on your feet if theyre under your desk where noone can see them anyways.

Heh, bud, I think women's dress shoes, high heels and such, are anything but comfortable, whether their toes are showing or not.
Personally, I think the whole issue should be taken on a case by case basis. If you're in a job like programming or computer work, or office work, I think it should be cool and that you should ask. If you're in a job like an office job, working with people on the outside, serving food, you should'nt even be asking whether you can take your shoes off.
I think in all professional settings, you should'nt be taking your shoes off.
Either way, if your at a esk where no one can see your feet, just do it. People do it all the time at offices, most girls I know do it at school. Just make sure it's something you can slip on fast, as to make it seem that it was a spur of the moment thing, and not something planned out, as it really is.

Well my attitude would be as long as it doesnt interefere with the person doing their job and with the quality of their work then it doesnt matter what they have or dont have on. If it affected the company or the employees ability to work in an extreme way then yeah it might be an issue but if they do it and business goes on and noone cares then it wouldnt matter. Just live and let live.

Where I work, the dress code is pretty relaxed. Whenever I'm in my cube, I usually have my shoes off and I even go to the laser printer nearby in just my socks. My manager has seen me in just socks and he doesn't really seem to mind.

Same here. I never wear more than flip-flops at work anyway, so when I kick them off at my desk and then get up to get printouts I often don't bother to put them on. I have several managers and supervisors on the floor all the time, and all of them have seen me go across the office at one time or another barefoot, and no one bitches about it. There are others in the office who now and then take off their shoes, and one old guy who always wears socks and birkenstocks (he's an eccentric old gay dude in his sixties, and his feet are like stunted or deformed or something -- someone told me it was from a long ago car accident). This guy goes around in his socks most of the night. I suppose they leave me alone, because if they gave me shit about it, they'd have to apply the policy equally (especially if it were a "safety issue") and I don't think they want or need to do that. Besides, I am by far the best proofreader in my office, and I think that might be carrying some weight with me, as far as what I can get away with. :) It also helps that we work the second shift, from 5:30 til 2:00 a.m., and we never see customers or even people from other offices much. Most of them have all gone home at 5:00. It's great working in a newspaper office building when it's almost deserted except for some late night editors and press and camera workers. A whole lot more relaxed than when all the daytime staff are there.

Wheee! Lucky me!!! I spend 99.9% of my time at or near a desk. We don't deal with customers, so dress is casual. Therefore, my shoes come off the moment I get to work, and they *stay* off whenever possible :)

Lucky girl! Like I said, I have the liberty to come to work in flip-flops, and have them off much of the time! Let's hear it for jobs where you don't have to deal with the public! :p (Although that can be fun too, but those jobs tend to have idiot managers who think that the public will object to employees being barefoot, or worse, they think it's the "law.")

    Blue skies,
    -Jeffrey
