I'm doing a full scale back yard vegetable garden in southern California. What would YOU recommend as a must ?
ooooh groovy! We just planted one at my pre-school, with Artichokes, lettuce (only plant that in the shade, it burns easily) eggplant, tomato, bok choy, broccoli, and some other stuff that I forget now. Herbs are always great, and for me bush beans are a must! have fun!
egg plants and squash are a staple for me,maybee some taters, mellons are allways good.dont forget some alliums like garlic, onions, shallots.and there is allways a use for tomatoes.sunshine to you and your garden frog
My all time favorite cantaloupe...Ambrosia. My all time fave tomatoe...Red Brandywine. Tomatillos are a must here for any mexican dish and salsa verde. Asparagus and strawberries.....oh yeah!! Sweet banana peppers. And don't forget the spicy ones. Summer squash and zuchinni...can't be left out. BASIL!! And plenty of different mints for tea. And all the different greens...kale,spinach,lettuces,and turnip. Peas if you can...they like coolness. get some onion sets and stick them in between everything. Good growing, teepi
Being Irish, I gotta say potatoes. I could live on them, with a couple of onions thrown in for good measure. Also, cabbage, carrots, and turnips. I don't know if they would grow as well over there as here, but there my personal faves.
Lettuce (romaine & red leaf) cause they have more nutrients than iceberg. Onions (red & yellow[for the green onions]), mints (put 'em in pots or they'll take over), basil, corn, green beans, tomatos (go for herilooms), cucumbers, & any other veggies you really like. Think of stuff you could eat all the time to keep gardening year round. Might even think of planning some dwarf trees for fresh (and tastier) fruit. Make sure though to find out what grows well in your zone so you don't put cold loving veggies out in the wrong time
I think tomatoes, peppers and sweet corn would be cool. I dunno if they'd grow well over there but you could try potatoes.
