I'm possibly going to be looking into moving that way in the near future but besides having driven through a few times I can't say I've spent any time there and I know nothing about anything that has to do with SC. Are there any "hip" places? What is the cost of living like & what about jobs? Any basic info anyone can offer would be a great starting point for me......I'm definatley looking for an area that's got a chill atmosphere w/ kynd folk. Thanks~

I have been to Charleston, and that seems like a pretty good place...near the ocean, and the people that I met anyway (for a shamanic workshop) were pretty cool. You may want to check MSN House and Home for info. on the cost of living there...(Google will have the exact web addy). Once you are in Msn House and Home, go the the moving and relocation section...they have a section there that compares the cost of living between where you are currently living to where you want to go. Good luck!

Yeah, like Sus said, Charleston is... okay. If you don't like being around college students, however, you probably wouldn't like it there. Most of South Carolina just blows, if you ask me. No matter where you are in the state, you're still in the middle of the bible belt.

What brings you this way, anyway?

I'm looking for someplace that is close enough to south fla but not actually in Fla. (im from s.fla) I live in TN right now so I know what you mean by "the bible belt". For some reason I've had this idea in my head of SC having these sleepy little beach towns with a more progressive element to them. That is kind of what I'm looking for. Perhaps I need to leave the south entirely to find the ideal place but the problem with that is I cannot handle cold weather...and I want to stay somewhat close to my family.

Beach town, eh? And not Florida? I guess that Charleston would be okay... Or maybe you could even look into places in NC. I've heard some good things about the tiny, tiny beach towns on NC's coast. I can't remember any names, but I'll ask around and see if anyone I know has any recommendations.

Oh, and by the way... I grew up in Cocoa Beach, FL. It's crazy how many former Floridians you find up this way.

the coast of Sc has alot of nice places. Check out the grand strand area, Myrtle Beach, there are several communities along the strand, cherry grove at the north end and surfside beach south, all are very nice and very hip. Also along the Nc coast, there are several barrier islands that are very low key, but very nice, they are sunset beach, ocean isle beach and holden beach. A bit further north is wilmington North carolina which may be the best of them all. Wilmington has beaches, schools, and alot of cool people.

    beach town near florida?
    st. simons island, georgia.
its like 45 mins north of jackosnville, fla.
    i used to live there.
    good scene.
    not big though.
small town feel but it's not much at all to live there.
    it's beautiful.
and it's close enough to a big city like jax which is always cool.
    it's a party town.
and cops and people like don't care.
it's pretty much a joke actually.
    haha.
    it's an odd place.
like no where i've ever been.
but yeah theres a good scene there.
lots of music festivals in suwannee which is like an hour away.
magnolia fest... suwannee spring fest.. check those out.

I'm from South Carolina, and I would say Charleston's beaches are most likely your best bet, but don't count on much progressiveness anywhere in SOuth Carolina. The barrier islands are nice, I have surfer cousins who live on the Isle of Palms.

Don't get me wrong - I live in Little River and love it. But you have driven through a couple times and now you want to base your whole life here?

Well, just move to Myrtle Beach and everything will be peaches and cream!
