I believe we did this thread before, but I can't find it. Anyway, theres an obvious stigma attached to anyone with dreads, or hell long hair in general(but dreads moreso), which makes work obviously hard to find. I know i'm currently looking for employment, and maybe others on the board are as well, so maybe we can get some suggestions going on what kind of jobs are available. I'm mostly talking about student/part time work not necessarily career work, but include that too I suppose. I recall a lot of people from the other thread working more off-the-cuff, so to speak, work such as self employment, craft sales etc, but maybe theres other options available for those that cant find that type of work :\
I'm a dance instructor and my boyfriend, who is also a dreadhead, works as a custodian at a University.
i work at a bead shop, really cool funky turkish caffe (my boss lloves dreadie mamas) and for an artist. i also go to school fulltime. i've had no problem finding work but thats cuz i kinda live in a hippyish community. maybe when i leave i might have trouble, but i wouldnt want to work for some place that discriminates dreadheads.... good luck! peace and love
I work at an apple orchard. Well...I did until recently. Apple season is pretty much over now, but I worked there for 4 months. Now that that job is kinda becoming obsolete, I'm substitute teaching here and there and I'll be looking for work at a newspaper (we'll see what happens). But yeah, the orchard was cool 'cause I could dress really casually and no one even mentioned anything about my hair. A lot of customers asked though...lol. I'm gonna miss working there
I am a tattoo artist working for myself- its actually very hard to find a job with dreads and lots of tattoos so this is definately the best way i could of ever went. check out my site, www.tattoosbyjoey.com not quite completed but it should be done within the week. joey
If you have a Mello Mushroom close to you, It is a pizza place and no matter what city I go to that has one there are always dreads working there, small coffee shops......... record stores........................... any place that has a unique customer base, will probably hire you to bring in business =)
i wanna work at like a guitar or music store. that would be awesome!!! they hire some cool people. one guy i think at sam ash was doin dreads neglect method... cuz it sure did look like it haha. those places are fun. i think anyplace unique like funkyphreshmama said would hire you. but i dont really wanna work... so i just babysit now haha. easy money. peace~
yeah i'm applying to sam ash/guitar center and a place called uncle sams music(local, independent in s. florida) - and ive got 2 years sales experience at circuit city so ive got some backing to pad my application at least just saving enough to comfortably move in to an apartment in june without having to truly live paycheck to paycheck!
I used to work in a record shop when i had crazy extentsions and things. Since having dreads ive worked for The Gadget shop, a Victorian Steam Fair (carters steam fair) a company which goes to clubs and sells keyring photos of people (that lasted 2 nights and got pissed off and left) Flyering for art exhibitions and now i work as a bar maid in a vegetarian and vegan pub.
I plant trees in the spring and summer and make enough to support myself the rest of the year through. Its hard on the body though so I'm going to school next September as I have recently decided I'd like to be a high school art teacher. Art teachers are allowed to be weird.
