I am soon going to begin learning how to blow glass, although I know basically nothing about it. I love the way glass looks and I have several ideas for things I would like to make. I've been in touch with several studios and am comparing my options.

Here's my question(s): Are there any glassblowers here that can offer me an overview or have any starting out tips? Can anyone point me in the direction of good resources such as websites or books that are informative? Also, how hard of a craft is it to learn? Is it a matter of just physically learning to control the hot glass? How long should it take me to become proficient? I'm also not sure if I should join a group class or take private lessons. I feel I would learn faster 1 on 1, but group classes are more economical.

Any info you all could provide would be greatly appreciated!

LOL! I thought this said "GRASSblowing Techniques"

I was gonna say, I didn't think you needed a technique for that... *grin*

I think it is a really technical craft. I've made glass beads before, and there were tons of techniques I needed to know so the glass wouldn't shatter and stuff like that. So I would strongly recommend going to a class. I've been thinking I'd like to do this as well; I'd like to get good enough to make some pipes and bongs as well as vases and stuff. Try going to a glass blowing studio they are truly amazing. I forget where Jersey is, but if you're near vancouver, BC I can tell you where some are. At places like that, you usually start out making paperweights, and if you're good at that within 3 weeks, then they keep you.
hope that helps some and good luck with that!

    Thanks man!

Jersey is on the opposite side of the continent as Vancouver. I've found a great studio a few hours from my house. I'm just trying to learn more about the craft itself.
