Hey, I'm a college student doing some market research. I'm tryin to figure out what music fans (especially indie, non mainstream) really want when they decide where to listen to music. There's plenty of stuff out there like podcasts, internet radio, indie radio stations, iPods, band websites, etc. all offer different benefits: -way of finding new bands -ratings for bands so you can just get good stuff -finding venues and shows -different amount of support for the artists -portability -cheap/expensive access (free radio vs. expensive iPod) -no commercials What do you all as indie listeners really care about when you decide where to get your music. Is there something else that would attract you to a source of music or whatnot? Thanks!
i never listen to new music on my ipod, i think people use mp3s and possibly podcasts to listen to music from their computers first, its the easiest way of getting into music as you can listen to it over and over again and whenever you want, where as with radio you can dislike a host, adverts just it can just fail to hold you attention if a song you dislike comes on. music magazines (and the free cds with them!) is another way i find out about new bands. singles and album reviews more so, as opposed to intereviews and articles.
I find a lot my indie stuff using the Stumbleupon plugin on Firefox. People tend to reccomend some pretty cool band sites on there. So I guess I get most of my indie mp3s from band's websites, and then if I like 'em I buy their CD's.
thanks... is there anything you really hate about how you get it now? difficult to find bands that play the kind of music you like? really hate commercials on the radio stations you get? too expensive?
i find alot of amazing bands that rnt indie on myspace.....bands that dnt have record lables yet and should or just got signed
most commonly used id have to say is purevolume.com go to any band website and there is a scroll bar at the bottom and go to the indie choice. usually good bands come up! some good bands ou might want to check out are heart of othello the morning of last winter lost in line sydney john connor inkwell skyflyer59 foreverdown just to name a few.
Well, I get most of my indie music from music.yahoo.com I've made my own radio station, and yahoo has a really cool program that allows you to personalize your music tastes, so I've been choosing indie and indie and more indie artists for the past year. Has turned out really cool. They give you the option of normal yahoo radio and the mre advanced version, but you have to pay for that one, so I'm satisfied with the normal version.
