one thing that comes to my mind when asked that question is the fact that when you join the army they shave your head (hence the 'crew cut') but I like having long hair because well, as was so eloquently put by maryfairy it freaks out the squares, I really do get a kick out of the looks i get from random people on the bus or subway when they see me & the others & hear us talking about obscure things that their restricted 'tunnel' minds can't begin to comprehend
I'd say that having long hair, or just letting it all hang out and grow long, is very liberating. Some would say that shaving it all off is liberating. It's different for everyone. A lot of :hippies: just let their hair go wild and free, because that's how they would like it to be! And that is essentially the spirit inside of them...wild and free! And a lot also let their hair lock up--they throw away the comb! Even more wildness and freeness!
I think that the initial reason was because the conservative mindset was that guys shouldn't have long hair back in the 60's... Nowadays it is more accepted, but still discriminated against by a lot of people. A lot of other groups like punk rockers (although less now then they used to), metal heads, and skaters also have long hair, because it is STILL and will probably for a long time be a sign of non-conformity, no matter how acceptable it becomes. My views, anyway.
Don't know about anyone else but my hair is long because that's the way I like it. Having said that, I don't think I qualify as a hippie.
Ive begun to view my hair as a plant. I like to take care of it and keep it growing. It also freaks out the squares and i love that and it helps us find our own kind. When dealing with people of a similar mindset the longer hair can give you some credibility as well. I love my hair so much!~
I've had long hair since i was 14, except once when I cut it for court when I was 19. I was always told to cut my hair by a lot of people. I never could understand why. Employers have flat out told me that they have a short hair policy for men. This is one of the many reasons why I hate society. I am computer tech and I'd like to once be able to walk into a client's home or office in street clothes with 50 braids in my hair and without shaving for weeks. I hate looking clean cut. It's just not me. I talk to my dad every few years and his first question is always "did you cut your hair?" I think these people (and most definitly my dad) are just insane, but i've noticed it's a lot of religious people that are offended my hair. Yet jesus had long hair.
This sums it up nicely http://www.choisser.com/longhair/four.html For more Longhaired awesomeness signed a life long long hair fanatic
I find that long hair is beautiful, and that to cut it off is shaming myself and all of the free loving spirits around me! Just kidding its more fun to DANCE with!
