Me too.but then again, i'm not that into country. I like how he's able to put real, authentic emotion into his songs, even when they're not his own (ex. Hurt, Personal Jesus).

I don't get into the "who is best" thing because all music appreciation is subjective.
But Johnny Cash is a giant, and in a genre all his own, imo. If he called Bob Dylan "country",Dylan could have easily called Cash "folk."
What he did,in my opinion, was take from various strains of American music, and by the force of personality and will, make it all his own style.
More than any other country artist,he made fans out of millions of people who never had thought much of country music before.

I agree - when I was a kid growing up in the uk in the 60's, I was lucky that my father was into Johnny Cash - it was about the only country I ever got to hear back then, other than stuff which occaisionally made the charts - Jim Reeves, Bobby Gentry, Glen Cambell - also, it was about the only music my dad liked that I liked too.
But I have to say that for me it's just the whole power of that voice that grabs me every time, in a way very few singers do.
I think Johnny Cash's appeal goes way beyond Country - :sunglasse

The voice of god, he's to country what Bob Dylan was to folk and The Beatles and Elvis to rock and roll.

He had a very disctinct sound. A lot of emotion and soul.
