Methinks you're confused about what emo is. Do a little research. Emo isn't simply wussy, emotional, or depressing, or whatever you think defines it.

I love the Smiths! Morrissey is an awesome lyricist and a great singer. But the band's musicianship was very underrated. What the hell is Johnny Marr doing nowadays? It's a shame for a talent like that to be doing nothing.

I LOVE THE CURE!!!!! the stones roses are cool too. 80's music is so awsome. I love 60'-70s too. I wish i could've gone to a cure concert but being in Australia made it hard with Robert Smiths fear of flying :(

haha i KNOW you love the smiths

in regards to the Cure, i've heard them called Gothic, but never emo
    they are SO not emo
    isnt emo technically emotional-hardcore?
and there is absolutely nothing 'hardcore' about them
    having said that,
    I *HEART* the Cure

Morrissey's high, falsetto (?) voice is a source of irritation for many otherwise Smiths fans but try listening to a cover of one of his songs by the loads of new (marketting hyped) "Emo" bands (http://www.coversproject.com/artist/Smiths) and you'll see that they are...

    just.
    not.
    the.
    same.

Only after hearing some of the covers did I realize how *gifted* the Moz truly is.
Totally one-of-a-kind! His voice is STRONG!
Not every pansy on the street can hold those notes!

I think The Smiths are great, if anything, for going against that electropop movement that was going on in the 80's. I've seen Morrissey do some Smiths songs live recently, and they're just not the same. Still, they got to me in my formative years, so I enjoyed them nonetheless.

The Cure I used to be *really* big into, but as I got older they sorta left me, although I still enjoy a lot of the really early stuff. I suppose when I was a moody teenager, that stuff made a lot more sense.

Other 80's band that I like in a similar vein have mostly been mentioned: Bauhaus and their offspring projects are awesome. Echo & The Bunnymen's first four records should be mandatory; they're as good as anyone. I also like Modern English, and it might be worth tracking down their singles collection to see if you like them. I think XTC ran circles around everyone else though; I'd see if I could find "Fossil Fuel", which is their singles from 77-92, two discs, just to see if you like them as well.
