Hey! I was discussing something with my mom (who lived in the 60's and 70's) about the issue of people wearing flowers in their hair. I know that a lot of women did, but was this a common practice for guys, too? Mom said that she can't remember any guys wearing flowers in their hair (she also lived in a small town though...). Thanks in advance! Peace! -james
This is a pic of me in high school. I wore some type of flowers alot in my hair then. But I wasn't called a hippie at that time.
ya i remember the dudes handing out flowers and saying "peace and flower power" it was a very cool time my friend angel hippiewise
according to the lyrics, if you are going to san francisco, be sure to weear a flower in you hair...and that was sung by a dude so i dont see why not!
Pax was referring to this specific song: SAN FRANCISCO (BE SURE TO WEAR FLOWERS IN YOUR HAIR), By Scott McKenzie. There is also another song entitled: THE FLOWER CHILDEN, By Marcia Strassman. Both songs are available on the RHINO CD: SUMMER OF LOVE, Volume 1: TUNE IN, Good Times & Love Vibrations, RHINO R2 71065. Then there is the brightly-colored, psychedelic album cover on the CD: FLOWER POWER-PSYCHEDELIC ROCK CLASSICS (K-TEL 4100-2). Groovy, baby! I was a teenager in the late60's/early 70's, in the suburbs of Detroit and above Ann Arbor, MI (mostly). I don't recall any dudes wearing flowers in their hair, none in High School, but they did smoke marijuana flowers (i.e. buds). Maybe some dudes did in Ann Arbor, MI, as almost anything goes there. In summertime, there are alot of bees that may go for any flowers that one does wear, plus flower-patterned shirts and bright colors. I did wear a beaded/leather Native American headband, sometimes. I still have it! During the annual ANN ARBOR HASH BASH (First Saturday in April, in Ann Arbor, MI), dudes may wear cloth and/or plastic marijuana leaf head-pieces, maybet not real flowers, though. I'd definately say that it was not common for men to wear flowers in their hair, and less so in Michigan. I didn't wear any flowers in my hair. I may have been called a "flower child", once or twice, but mostly "hippie" and "freak". I don't have a problem with men wearing flowers in their hair, but men who do, may get "teased" and get hit with politically-incorrect "Gay" comments, or the common: "Are you a boy or a girl?" Island women (like in Hawaii and Polynesia) commonly do were "flowers in their hair", as a common tradition. It's sort of a tropical thing. California (and especially San Francisco) are the areas wear men probably did wear flowers in their hair, the most. Alot of Haight-Ashbury documenataries (like REVOLUTION (1969), SOMETHING'S HAPPENING/THE HIPPIE REVOLT (1967) and THE HIPPIE TEMPTATION), may show some men wearing flowers in their hair, but not alot. THE SUMMER OF LOVE (1967), in San Francisco may have been a peak year for men to wear flowers in their hair. There is a time factor, also. More late 60's, not much 70's. "If you're going to San Francisco, Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. If you're going to San Francisco, You're gonna met some gentle people there. For those who come to San Francisco, Summertime will be a Love-In there." And so on . . . -Scott McKenzie "I saw her sitting in the rain, Raindrops falling on her, She didn't seem to care, She sat there and smiled at me, Then I knew, she could make me happy, Happy, Happy, she could make me very happy, Flowers in her hair, Flowers everwhere! I love the flower girls, I just don't know why, She simply just caught my eye, I love the flower girls, She seemed so sweet and kind, She crept into my mind, Into my mind, into my mind," And so on . . . -THE RAIN, THE PARK & OTHER THINGS, By The Cowsills "I think that its' so groovy now, that people are finally getting together." -REACH OUT OF THE DARKNESS, By Friend And Lover Peace, love and understanding . . . (\**/) BUNNY: I'm a hare, who wears flowers in my hair! ( ) (> < )
I still like to pick clovers and make chains out of them, for necklaces and hairpieces...anyone else do this? It's really fun in the warm months to just sit and pick clover flowers and string them together. teh-horace, great sig...obama is cool. not too soon to start supporting 2008.
sometimes i sit in the grass and make flower crowns and put them on my horses head. they look good on him, i think any guy can wear flowers in his hair
