my dreads. i got them done by my sister, who is a hairdresser. i just went into where she works, and her and one of the other ladies did them for me. usually, you just go to a hair salon and ask them if they do them. or get a few friends to help you, and do them yourself. although, depending on where you live, there are places that do dreads and only dreads. so they're pro's. whatever works, tho. peace
the best piece of advice is to not "get them done" someplace. just stop combing your hair. i had mine backcombed by some friends to start off, but now from what i´ve learned about locks, i would NEVER do it again (backcombing).
My lurrrverly boyfriend is in the process of doing mine - just gone past the halfway stage, doing a bit each day. Will be sure to post my pic when they are finished! I've always dreamed about having them, but my hair is so fine and slippery I didn't think they would ever become reality. Therefore, the back-combing method has worked WONDERS (no pain, no gain as my other half keeps saying!) The dreads i have now look like they have been on my head for months. I am so chuffed! I will treasure and respect my dreadies always, and give them all the tlc they deserve.
Lisa - I have super fine, super soft, baby hair also. I've tried it a few times, but never got past having half of my head done. I kept worrying they would look silly b/c of my hair type. I'm really encouraged now that you have similar hair and are having luck with yours. I'd be psyched if you'd post a pic when you're finished to show how they came out. Good luck!
twistin didnt work for me, so im goin try the backcombin method, i hear thats the way to go, ill post a pic in a week or so when there done...
i dont really have regrets either. but after seeing what can happen when you just let your hair completely go to its own devices... you´ll never go back. and here are my locks, too: -in the pic from behind, i was tilting my head back. it´s an old picture - but my dreads are actually about that long now, if not longer. -in the second pic... i have a beard now, so i dont really look like that anymore.
i'm really thinking about getting dreadies now... im just so bad at making commitments... maybe someday...
you got great lookin locks bro... what is it you wish was different? i got buds who wen the natural route and their locks look just like yers. but i also understand that pictures don't always capture what they really look like. and to the one who asked if it can be overnight.... as far as i've seen.. even if you 'have em done' its at least 9 monthes of tending to them, some palm roll, some candle, some backcomb.... and of course, some just let em be. but normaly it takes time for them to tighten down into ropey dreads.
...ok so they arent dreads yet (I'm only a week in...gimme a break)...its gonna be a few months before theyre really anything
you said it yourself, man. what i wish was different? nothing, really - but i just learned that doing ANYTHING to dreads will ultimately be bad for them. they can come undone, never lock up, etc. and here´s a recent picture so you can see them better:
yeah, i've had one or two come undone cuz i tried fuckin with them. so i just leave them, now. ans to whoever asked, you can go in and get them done, but they're still not a one day thing. if you were to go home and wash your hair, they'd probably all come out. they still take months and years to lock up tight. my friend had dreads for three years. he had his done with backcombing, and a chemical perm. they turned out great, but i wouldn't get the perm done to my hair. well, not again, since i had dreads before these and had the perm done. they smelt baaaad.
Holy Shit, MelvinDoo!! Those are the sickest, tightest, most mother fuckin badassesd dreads I've ever seen!!!!
When I was really little I thought only a certain race had dreds and I thought you were just born with them... lol
Oh So Strange Indeed...is your hair just twisted? I hope they turn into dreads, but they don't really look like they will without some help. But good luck with whatever you want to happen... My dreads are about 1/2 a year old now, and I love 'em. They're not an over-night thing. It's cool to see the changes that they've gone through since the beginning. I backcombed mine, and it took my boyfriend and me 14 hours to get my whole head done. I had started with straight hair down to the middle of my back, and after the first day of backcombing, my hair was a little below my shoulders. Now, after all the tigtening and shrinking, my dreads don't even reach my shoulders...haha. But hey, that's a good sign...I'm happy with 'em... I can't wait to see what they'll look like after a year and then after two!
