I agree with too many posters to quote. Really don't see the depiction of violence as a problem. As has been said there is/has been violence in societies without television. Think it is ultimatly part of our nature (after all animals are violent too) As a child I avidly watched a children's television show made in the 60s (Captain Scarlet). Were it made today, and/or with real people instead of puppets, I don't believe it would be considered suitable as a childrens TV show. Such is the nature and degree of the 'violence' involved. There is at least one death per episode etc, and this is integral to the plot. Amazingly enough I am not a violent person at all. Neither is anyone else I know who grew up with that show, or shows with similiar levels of violence (childrens or otherwise). I'm also a writer and among those I know we have such fun writing and reading things of that nature. It seems a cathasis and harmless way to explore this issues.
I think it's really frustrating that people are so quick to blame telivision and parents and peers and this and that. How about blaming the people who pulled the trigger? No one wants to do that. 16 year old brings a gun to school, shoots some kids. People run around saying "where were the parents?" "what was this kid watching?" "what where the other students doing to him?" Certainly these are reasonable questions, but that doesn't stop that person from being the criminal. 16 year olds are old enough to take responcibility for such actions. People need to get over this whole "oh, but he was just a child!" bullshit. A 16 year old is not a child. A 16 year old is perfectly capable of knowing what he's doing when he shoots the gun. In 7th grade, after Columbine, I watched in horror as everyone obsessively pointed fingers at telivision, parents, Marilyn Manson and classmates. Is it possible that some of these things factored into it? Perhaps, though I find it really hard to believe that anyone ever shot anyone because they heard a Marilyn Manson song. But who was at fault? That should be easy, but all these years later, people still look at me funny when I say the people to blame for Columbine were two kids named Eric and Dylan. When did our society decide that people are to stupid to control their own actions? I'm not a particular fan of violent movies and telivision, and have never had trouble finding something else to watch.
the theories about tv violence are nice and interesting but you must have the practice to find the answer - in this case i suggested people do my experiment. try the experiment - if you dare!
theres alot of violence on tv, a little too much. it can be fairly entertaining. but i know, at least for myself, that it makes death seem like a joke. If someone i hade known died, i would just be like owell and just take it like the moved to a differnt state or something. Then, almost about a year or so ago, i did realize how sad deaths of friends and family can be. I dont know what changed me. but yes i do think there is too much violence on tv
Totally agree with feministhippy Except I suppose the mentally ill and such, we all have the intelligence and morality to choose how we behave and accept responsiblity. If these theories are true, then why is it that only a very small minority of the general population are compelled to violence and act on it. Surely if TV truly were such a huge influence then considering the viewing figures almost everyone would be a mass murderer by now, and that simply isn't the case. It is far too simplistic to make such solid links between one influence and a form of behaviour, there are just so many other factors that affect people.
I do not believe there is too much TV violence. Many of the shows that were staples in my childhood like Thunder Cats, Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and I am ashamed to say it now, Power Rangers included a lot of violence. Despite all of this violence I have not gone on a killing spree or anything else people blame TV for.
There's not enough violence on TV but some movies still have the gore and violence I like. Try watching a movie on the FX channel, it's all edited for televsion.
There's tons of violence on TV but it dosen't worry me as such. However what is frightening is reality news violence, that sickens me, when it's reality and not on a film, etc, being screened.
Ok take out all the bad stuff out of TV I mean everything the voilenice the sex the drug refernces oh Ill even take out the brain washing what do you have left? nothing Anything entertaing is BAD excpet sports...mabey...steroids... so you just got to rember its just a TV Show.
ok, there's too much violence in the movies most violent movies are made byHollywood don't you think so american movies influence peoples mind in bad ways especially in poor countries
I think the words from the movie 'waking life' are really relevant here. (Loose quote) "The media's not here to inform us about the injustices in the world, its here to get us to accept them" I believe this, violence on TV and the media is one of the only barriers between us and mass hysteria.
If you compare the television of 1966 to the television of: 2006,you would see that a prime time action programme would be:'77 Sunset Strip' 'Voyage to the bottom of the sea' or 'Star Trek' .A prime time programme now would be; 'C.S.I.' or 'Law & Order' with realistic violence & foul language. This may seem a simplistic approach but in 40 years television has changed from entertaining us: to shocking us for cheap thrills. When I switch on the t.v. set I don't want to see life in the gutter or how violent human nature can be.I see enough of that on the streets.I want to be entertained with the best in human nature.Style,slickness,thought-provoking etc. I think we are conditioned to accept mild violence & foul language because television institutionalises it; as commonplace.
There's not ENOUGH violence. That's what I like about HBO shows... violence, sex, bad language. Ah.... I love cable.
overall, i think there is too much violence on t.v. if it were real violence, like documentarys about cops beating up honest citizens, it would make people open their eyes. on the other hand, they have stuff like tom and jerry instead where its cartoons beating the crap out of each other. this is supposed to be a kids show, so why are they telling the kids its ok to fight? tom never dies. jerry always wins. it makes kids think of death as something difficult to reach, whereas its verry easy to die. it gives them a false sense of security.
loony tunes cartoons were far more violent "but funny". hippies grew up watching those since the late 1930s
