I saw it yesterday. It was beautiful, sad, moving, and utterly bohemian. In 1989 NYC, a group of 8 friends struggle with poverty and AIDS. My favorite songs were "Light My Candle," "No Day But Today," and "Viva la Vie Boheme!" Best comment on the movie I've seen so far (from iidb.org): Noone yet has mentioned how bad this movie is likely to piss off the Religious Reich yet. Two interracial homosexual couples, two thirds of the cast is HIV-positive, and the words "dildos", "masturbation," and "Lenny Bruce" all appear in a single song. Not to mention all these characters are portrayed as good, caring people. I wonder how many repressed Republicans were sweating throughout the film.
I loved it so much!!! I saw it on stage like 4 years ago, and then got the CD (I have the whole thing memorized) and I thought the movie was incredible. Even though they changed it from the play, I loved the changes (and I ussually don't) It's most definatly a must see. OOOh, and that comment is classic :0)
I haven't seen it yet, I'm so excited to, I saw the broadway play but I went with my best friend so I missed alot cuz of goofing around, so I can't wait to see the movie.
I'd love to see it. I heard it was very good. I only know a couple of the songs- Take Me Or Leave Me, I watched girls in high school rehearse that song- and Seasons of Love, which everybody knows. Everything pisses off the Christian right. I stopped keeping track a long time ago.
I saw it yesterday and was really inspired. Can't describe how much it changed me. Just thinking about it...wow. I was disappointed by all the negative reviews of it. There are two camps, it seems: conservative Christians who feel that the movie was immoral and mistakenly took it for a family film, and die-hard fans of the play who hated the adaptation to film. I've never seen the play, so I don't know, but I think that it's hard to hate this film. I'm going to see it again next weekend.
LOVED IT. We saw it last night, it was beautiful and really really moving. As for the RightWing Christian peoples, frankly (no offense) they need to get over themselves and move on... gay marriage/relationships rock, interracial relationships rock, and having a loving family (related or not) to support you when things are bad is wonderful. So SHUT UP. I don't know why people who loved the play would hate the film. I saw it twice when it was here, loved it, and loved the film too. The only changes they made were for the better (except when they sort of shortened La Vie Bohem and Finale B), all the cast members were the same except Mimi and someone else (I forget who) so yah, it was pretty much the same thing - why complain? It was beautiful. Can't wait til it comes out for purchase, that baby's coming home with ME!
It was an ok movie. I don't mind that it talked about interracial /gay relationships or AIDS, but it felt like it just dragged on.
i saw this flick. it was good. i mean ive never seen the play. but it had so manyemotions. soso cuteee
i saw it with my one time girlfriend, and i didn't really like it. the middle part of it was pretty good, and one part really moved me. i walked out not liking it, but a couple days later i realized it was okay. my friend had the same reaction.
i absolutely loved the movie. i haven't been able to stop listening to the soundtrack since. i have been in love with broadway plays and musicals since i was little, but i can't afford to make trips up to new york very often. thank god for being five minutes from the train into philadelphia. i go down to philly all the time, and i just found out a couple of days ago that Rent is coming to Philly in May. i am absolutely ecstatic!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! Sorry, just needed to stress that. I am a TOTAL RENThead (ultimate RENT fan). I saw the stage version 4 years ago and fell in love with it. When I heard the movie was coming out I about flipped- I couldn't wait to see it. I saw it on opening night and again 2 days later. I LOVE the movie so much. I have the soundtrack memorized (yes I know i'm a dork, it's okay). I can't say enough good things about this movie. If you haven't seen it, you MUST!
