When I go into a thrift I look mostly at the clothes for their fabric. An old butterfly curtain to make a skirt, etc. I'm overstocked on half price cord, and lately i've been finding 3 or 4 yds of fabric for only 50 cents total. My last find was plaid flannel to line messenger bags with. I recently bought 8 yds. of really heavy blue jean fabric that is 60" wide for a dollar a yard at Wally world to use on the back of a quilt. It had just been put out. My son works in their distribution center and makes twice what I make. I'm sorry I missed that sale but I'm probably better off as I need to recyle what I have. Keep stitchin... your work is incredible.

how did i miss this thread before?

i think this may have come up in the wrong thread, but i have to agree about wal mart. nothing like beating a dead horse, eh? ;)

but i think of it like this. one day i may very well like to have my own store. i could see a couple others on here doing the same thing some day. wal mart is making this extremely hard, impossible for some people. there's a reason that small businesses in many of the towns that are expecting a walmart get together to start petitions to keep them out. the small businesses in these towns end up struggling, some end up having to close down completely, and you lose a lot when you lose these businesses.

on a craft related note ~ i find that if you take the time to source out organic/hemp/etc. material and take the price into consideration when pricing your final piece, people will pay more. when i was making clothes, i priced based on how much went into the piece (material and labor) and i didn't run into problems not being able to sell something made with hemp if it was more expensive, in fact i would say that it sold faster most of the time. i used to get it from www.hemptraders.com.

i gotta back up my girl. i hate the corprate slave world more than anyone, it starved and rejected me. some folks dont have it so good that sewing and shopping is a hobbie. somefolks dont have time to save the world because thier are mouths to feed. if she can get brand new fabric for 50 cents a yard then go for it. and sometimes when im really hungry, the best tasting/ cheapest veggie food is french fries from mcdonalds, and the only folks who would give me a chance to work for a living, was Starbucks. wtf you cant win em all. so if wal mart is there, and you can use it to your advantage, then go for it. all the years livin in my bus, wal mart gave me a place to park, and didnt mind if i pissed in thier bathroom, and had good OJ for half the price.

FYI. Until just a few years ago the french fries at Micky D's were flavored with Beef fat.

    Obviously not.

You can't tell people to "go for it" and then say you hate it more than the people who are not going for it.

P.S. I have already apologized to FunkyPhreshMama, (and a couple others) for "flaming" her thread.

"some folks dont have it so good that sewing and shopping is a hobbie. somefolks dont have time to save the world because thier are mouths to feed"

Please please please don't insinuate that I'm living large. I do know about mouths to feed, and I also have been homeless. yeah, eating out of dumpsters for weeks at a time, soup kitchens, pan handleing etc.

    "it starved and rejected me."

We are all the victim of "the corprate slave world" not just "somefolks".

:& I was trying so hard to stay off my soap box too. :&

i really don't think anyone said anything wrong in this thead, we are all entitled to our own beliefs and opinions. and we certainly don't live our lives based on someone else's definition of what is right and wrong.

i personally liked reading everyone's opinons.

i just felt attacked at first because it wasnt really a consumer advocacy thread or anything it was just me trying to let someone in on a good deal and it turned into people bashing wal mart, and i wasnt expecting that since it isnt what the thread was started about.... it is ok cuz like you said everyone has their own opinion but i was trying to help someone out........................

I too am limited in cash and we lived a 55 mile round trip from the nearest place to get fabric....and that is of course Wal-mart.

I do go there...haye doing it, but in order to go anywhere else it would turn into a 80 mile trip to Chillicothe or a 150 mile trip to cincinatti.
I can either go to walmart and shop a sale and at least feel good about NOT paying what they originally wanted..about 4-6 dollars a yard.

OR I can go to another place and put more wear and tear on our 21 year old truck and give more money to the oil greedy bastards.

Same thing with thrift stores. There are none out here. But when we do go to the big city i do shop yard sales as much as I can.

Sweetie, you did good. You bought when they were at least forced to discount their goods.

Hell unless you grow the cotton and weave it yourself or pay bigger bucks to assure yourself that it is all grown and processed here...do you know where any of it has come from??
Do you do your homework on every piece of every food that goes in your mouth....is mommy and daddy still buying your food and clothes???
When money becomes an issue, and you have to eeck out an existance the way you look at things does change. You can say "fuck you" to certain things and make sacrifices...I have no running water, no septic system, and we heat with our own wood. I make most of our food and grow most of it, I do without alot in order to live like I want so its a trade off.

wow, that's a really good deal on fabric. i cant find deals like that at our thrifts

ethically, i dunno about choosing to shop at hellmart, just because every other place is selling sweat shop goods, doesnt make it okay, y'know?

sometimes there are just so many shades of grey...

You've obviously not read the entire thread.

You might want to do that before you insult someone directly.

I'll not respond to you again...

    HUH???
DID not direct that at anyone directly.
Especially since I don't know who is living with their parents or not.

Just meant that people who have not walked in anothers shoes should not be quick to judge.

hey i was homeless for 3 years, never once panhandled. i hit up a soup kitchen twice. its cus i knew i could get some hemp and beads at the wal mart with the money i made playin my mandolin. all im sayin is that sometimes you dont have 30 bux to spend on materials, if she can make a brand new dress for 3 bux and some time, then more power to her. im just sayin you cant stop wal mart, so take advantage of it.

gdhmomchild, Stop beating yer head, I'll give it a rest.

Just one thing I ask from everyone, Pleeeeeeeese-o-pleeeeeeeese don't assume that everyone who boycots walmart is wealthy, or otherwise taken care of.
