my grandad was a tailor in ireland like his whole life...as were his 2 daughters...my cousin recently sent me a pic of his machine...my mom recently gave me this pic of my aunt n him in his sewing room... the machine is dated 1887...its nuts! it looks like it was painted black at some point..ya can see it chipping off in the new pics... crazzzzy innit?
I wish I came from a long line of tailors. I come from cooks... But.. I have a sewing machine that looks just like that in my bedroom here at my dad's. Just like it. Neat-o. Tell your granddad he's cute.
I have a sewing machine just like that, but it's blue! (not the one i sew on , I don't have the patients)
do you know when he converted the treadled to a motor? My dad did that for my mom in 60-61 with her 1923 Singer from her mom/aunt (aunt who raised her). I have been looking for a treadle, no motor, ever since after using a 1947 New Home electric.
moonjava-i would love to tell him but he died a couple decades ago...ill send up a prayer for him letting him know ya think so tho...lol...he looks about as irish as ya can get Cre-yeah its still in the family.. its sitting in my aunts house still..my cousin Sharon said its the only machine my aunt has used her whole life n she fears what would happen if anything ever happened to it...and yeah the messy sewing room runs in the family for sure..lol drumminmama-I really have no idea about it...other than what Sharon said in her email im clueless about it really.. when i go over there ill snap a pic of me sewing on it for you guys ..lol
As a complete history nerd, I really love that! My grammy has 2 old machines, one treadle, one converted. They are awesome, but they do require a bit of patience.
i had a singer sewing machine that looked much like that one that was my grammy's, i thought from the early 1900's. i loved it, wish i still had it.
ahah.. i kinda figured.. seeing as most people living in 1870 aren't still alive now.. regardless. you go ahead and tell him.
My sewing machine is a Singer from around the 40's or 50's. It's electric, but made that way rather than converted. I love it though, it's so sturdy compared to the plastic ones you can buy today. Heavy as heck, and yes it requires some patience and can only do a few stitches, but it's reliability can't be beat. My grandmother and mom sewed on it for years before passing it on to me because they got new plastic ones. LOL
