Who are you?

Did you know that chimpanzees and orangutans have a sense of self? There was a study done where these animals would be put in front of a mirror, to get used to it. After some time, there were tranquilized, put to sleep. At this point, the researchers performed the "rouge test" in which they would place a red dot on the animals' foreheads. Lo and behold, they looked in the mirror, puzzled, touching the red dots. These animals showed that they have a sense of self.

I don't see how that would possibly determine that they have a sense of self. Simply that they are aware of what a normal chimp or orangutan look like, and that a red dot is peculiar
