Made this hat yesterday! The yarn came from a $2 thrift store sweater, which I unravelled. The yarn was/is a 3 stand yarn.. one strand white, one gray-brown and one black. After making, I koolaid dyed the hat, using 2 packets of lime koolaid.
the arrow points to the sweater i used before unravelling... still have over 3/4 of the yarn left! haah
thanks everyone! I am addicted to sweater unravelling.... sooo much yarn for sooo cheap! As for my looks and my eyes, I can only thank my ancestors for their apparent need to continuously marry their cousins. hahaha.
my thoughts EXACTLY!!! the green really compliments your lovely green eyes! you did an excellent job on the hat! what an awesome way to give that old sweater a new life! Yay for recycling!!!!
I love recycling and making something cool out of it. It's like a separate buzz, aside from making something beautiful, knowing that you creatively recycled it. It turned out beautiful. I know you weren't asking me, but kool-aid is totally okay to dye wool with. If you boil it with some water and white wine vinegar until the water is clear the dye will set in the wool. As far as I know it has to be 100% wool. I've done this with my kids. It's fun.
Thanks everyone! If you want to know more about the koolaid dye method, there is a thread over in the yarn forum... here is the link to it! http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1980703#post1980703 I added step-by-step instructions and some pictures!
i definitely am not a knitter or crocheter, but i'm so excited that you got thrift store sweaters to use for their yarn! i know that may be a little naive of me, but i never thought of unraveling sweaters. way to recycle! i always go to thrift stores and get corduroy skirts and pants and blouses with neat prints to use for fabric for sewing---it's so much cheaper than buying fabric at a store, and the variety is often better
to be honest, the idea of unraveling sweaters didn't hit me until about 8 months ago. I used to knit and unknit all sorts of things that I made, but didn't dawn on me to unknit "professionally made" sweaters for a long time. Now I rarely buy new yarn.. always just buy sweaters.
