Okay, i have only had my new laptop for about a month and a half, the CDROM/DVD drive has become corrupt or may be missing- this is the message it gives on the Device Manager- Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) i have tried uninstalling it but it won't work still. the drive will not read anything. i have no idea how it happened. will i have to return it, because i have just moved away from home and the shop i purchased it from is miles away. Has anybody had a similar problem or know what i can do thanks, michaelx
Since you CAN get online, I suggest going to the manufacturers website, and download the latest driver. That should solve the problem. You might also try to reinstall your DVD software.
cheers for the advise, ive tried but failed, i downloaded it but still would not work. I have alos tried reinstalling it, but it installs it back on with the same message, think its time for a completely new driver thanks anyway
did you try installing the driver? also do you have any pieces of cd burning software? some of them come stock with drivers that are "just good enough" to make the thing work until you can get the real driver working.....
thanks, i will try that tommorow, as i need sleep right now, i have tried unistalling and reinstalling and it wouldn't work. and i can't install from the back up disk, as it wouldn't run the cd. thanks for the advise
More than likely it's failed. CD and DVD burners are extremely sensitive to wear 'n tear. I had an LG burner fail three days after purchase (not refurb!), because I burned ten discs straight out of the box. I recommend using your main drive (CD-ROM or CD-R) for reading only, and then using an external drive, CD-+R/DVD-+R, for burning. This way you greatly reduce the wear on the laser of the burner...
Device Manager is reporting the driver "is corrupted or missing", not the drive itself. 2 things you'll need to know, what OS you're running (XP, ME, 98, I'm guessing XP since it's a 'new' one 1 1/2 mo ago) and the name of the drive Device Manager is reporting ( ex. LG CD-ROM CRD-8400B). Regardless, you'll need to remove the driver as best you can, by clicking Remove or Remove Driver in Device Manager, then reboot and reinstall the driver. If you can't get the driver from the manufacturer or Microsoft, try driverguide.com. You'll have to register first, but it's relatively painless.
geez, I've had the same off brand burners (dvd and cd) for the past year at least, I constantly burn crap....... maybe you just got one that was fucked up.....
Maybe, but this has happened to the last three or four burners I had. I've had an HP CD burner and DVD-burner for the past 6 months that haven't failed yet (even under massive burning sessions). My point is that you get what you pay for; with cheaper burners, you're going to get a cheaper laser that's going to cop-out with heavy burning, where name-brand burners will last forever.
it isn't the amount of burning, because i havn't burned one thing since i have had it. I only use the drive for watching DVDs and listening to CDs. i will try to install a new drive from the website given and see how it goes. thanks everyone. peacex
To reduce wear 'n tear try ripping the CD's (DVD's is quite a bit more complicated if they're write protected). Optical drives suck in the lifespan department. My LiteOn CDRW is now a CD-ROM drive, but it's 3 yrs old so I'm not complaining. My Pioneer DVD-RW now can't burn CD's tho it can still burn DVD's. I got an USB external drive now so if my DVD drive craps out I don't know if I'll replace it.
