Me and some of my friends have been having a dispute on what makes a Vetetarian and a Vegan. I say that a Vetetarian eats no red meats but can eat birds, fish, and dairy if they like every now and then, just no red meat. They say that a Vetetarian can't eat any meat, red, bird, or fish. Who's right?

So what would you call someone like that? Are they a "Lacto-Ovo-Pesco-Pollo Vegetarian"?

See, I thought there were a few different levels of being a Vegetarian.
    1) No red meat (chicken and fish rarely), can have dairy.
    2) No meat and fish (dairy rarely)
    3) Nothing from animals. Vegan.

From the FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

    Distinctions in the veggie world:
The most common tags to describe various vegetarian diets are:
lacto-ovo (consumes milk and eggs), Lacto- (milk, no eggs), Ovo- (eggs, no milk), vegan (no animal or insect byproducts, usually including honey).
Sub divisions include but are not limited to: fruitarian (only eats regenerative parts of a plant: seeds, fruit, some harvested leaves) raw vegan (food is never heated above 160 F)

People pursuing the veggie diet who still eat fish, poultry or any other flesh are still omnivores.
We support your journey, but we might not teach you the secret handshake.

therefore, if you eat something with a mother, you are an omnivore.

yeah, there is absolutely no such thing as a flesh-eating vegetarian.
If you had to kill it to eat it, obviously it's not a vegetarian product. I live on the coast, and many people like to say they are vegetarian...then they eat fish.
Everyone is on their own journey, and what we choose to eat is our own decision, but vegetarians don't eat any animals as all. This includes seafood and birds!

Vegetarianism is the theory or practice of living upon vegetable and fruits. The root of Vegetarianism come from Latin word “Vegetus” which means be full, fresh and be joyful. Vegetarian will cleansing and merit-making.

Then what am I? The only time I eat meat is when my parents force it on me. Like this Thanksgiving, I could only have Turky or Tuna. That's all they made...I hate eating meat.

    In this case ...

You are wrong, and your friends are right.

Vegetarians *do not eat meat*. That includes red meat, white meat, green meat, and every other colour of meat that exists.

Some vegetarians DO eat dairy and cheese, and eggs.

A vegetarian that eats dairy is called a lacto-vegetarian.

A vegetarian that eats eggs is called an ovo-vegetarian.

A vegan is someone who eats no animal byproducts whatsover. That includes ... meat, eggs, cheese, milk, whey, lactose, FDC Red #40, gelatin, and a variety of other animal products that you probably don't even know are in your food to begin with.

You'd call that "a person that doesn't eat red meat."

If you wanted to be technical, you could probably call them a pesco-pollotarian.

But there's no such thing as a pesco-vegetarian or a pollo-vegetarian. Those words are oxymorons.

There are a few different levels.

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian (eats milk and eggs but no MEAT, not even fish or chicken),
Lacto-vegetarian (eats milk but not eggs or meat)
Ovo-vegetarian (eats eggs but not milk or meat)
True vegetarian (eats no milk, eggs, or meat)
Vegan (eats no animal products whatsoever)

    The colour.

    Hehe ... well said!

That would make you a selective omnivore. You choose to eat meat very seldom, but meat is still a part of your diet (and thus, you can't exactly call yourself a vegetarian).

If all your parents made for Thanksgiving was turkey or tuna ... they need to explore the other parts of Thanksgiving, like corn, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, carrots, ... *drools*

I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! :D

Yeah, people assume some weird things...I often turn down meat because I'm veggie, then people will offer me fish instead.

Having said that, I do have some supposedly "vegetarian" friends who will eat fish, and one who didn't even know that was such a thing as vegetarian cheese.

I don't choose to eat meat though, I'm made to eat it. Beleave me, I would much reather have pees, a baked potato, corn pudding, and some rice then any meat for dinner.

the table literally had a platter of bird carcass and a bowl of tuna?
For some reason, I don't believe that.
