I've never done appliques before, but do you need a seger (sp?) to do them by machine? I'm getting this book on how to do them from this craft store, but I was curious about that....
i tried doing that with a regular machine (and im not the best sewer) and it turned out nice. i just pinned down the applique stright stiched around it and then ziggzaged around the edges.
You can use your sewing machine to do appliques. Make sure your setting is for zigzag with a near "0" stitch width...the tighter the stitches the fuller your lines will be. You can also set your stitch length at different settings. I'd practice on a double folded fabric scrap and change your setting until you get what you want. Another tip that's nice is using the heat bond webbing sold in the fabric dept. You need a teflon sheet that is made just for bonding the webbing to the backside of your applique. It doesn't stick to the bonding and then you can cut out your shapes and iron them in place so they stay (much easier than pinning). Good luck!
do you mean tighter as in if it was looser you would be able to gather with it, or as in the smaller zigzag? I never thought to tighten it the first way, I'm gonna go try it as soon as I can, if that fixes the issue I've been having with apliques then I will be so very in love with you!
