I've got 1x256mb DDR SDRAM and a free expansion slot in my notebook. I run XP and Mandriva Linux with KDE, both seem like they could be faster.

I'm wondering if I need to "match" RAM, i.e. do I have to put 256 in the expansion slot or can I put in 512mb?

  2. on my olde (1999) compaq board I think I'm running a stick of 128 and a stick of 512, I could be wrong, but I think it's okay.....

The general rule is yes, but I don't know much about notebooks.

You can definitely add a stick of 512 or 1024, or whatever you want.

Just make sure that you have RAM going in a *DESCENDING* order.

In other words, if your 256 is in slot 1 and your 512 is in slot 2, it WON'T work.

You have to have the highest size of RAM in slot 1, and lowest in slot 2.

I guess you're right, I put in 256 in a machine with 128 and it says 256 total now. Guess i have to switch slots.

Here's my geek friend kevin, I had to erase some of the e-mail.
Click Start, then right click my computer, select properties. Click advance to right corner. Look for virtual memory, then change the ammout that you want.
