I currently have an adorable Shi-tzu, but I've recently wanted to look into adopting a cat. the only snag is that I have allergies to shedding animals. I've also heard that Siamese cats do not shed, what other cats share that quality?

Oh wait... I just remembered... There is a breed of cat that will not shed... or rather, can not shed... - the Sphynx -

Yeah... Siamese shed. lol Somebody lied to you! I am allergic to everything that doesn't have scales. Dogs, cats, birds, horses, cows, goats... everything. Some are worse than others.

I have a cat. (see my sig pic?) It was hard for about a week... a week of allergy pills and eye drops and tons of kleenex. But, its fine now.

Your body should build up anti-allergines or whatever towards YOUR SPECIFIC animal. I am still allergic to cats, just not to my cat. Well.. a little allergic.. if i get a scratch it swells, if i get his fur in my eyes they itch, but not nearly as bad as I am with other animals. But an hour with anyone else's cat and I am needing my inhaler and some claritin.

Does that make any sense? Its like how your body builds up antibodies against each different cold strain. But, it does take a while... it's not an overnight thing, and there will be a period of allergy issues. (If you have super severe allergies, this might not be a good idea.)

hmmm, there is a hairless cat that doesnt shed obviously because they have no hair...i forget the breed name. they have special needs tho due to being all skin. they cant be outdoors much due to sunburn and i think there are some other things they require but i cant think of them off the top of my head.

....same cat used in the austin powers movies....mr bigglesworth.

The hairless cat is the one I mentioned - the name of the breed is Sphynx - they are completely bald - Mr Bigglesworth was a Sphynx.

i kmow many people who were allergic and are now ok, just because they've got used to cats.

Also, imho, if you can't find a cat at a local shelter to suit your allergies.... don't go looking for a purebred sphinx that costs hundreds of dollars. All you will be doing is perpetuating breeding when there are plenty of animals in the world already that need loving homes.

    say "NO" to breeders.

most animal allergies are to dander, not hair, ie little flakes of skin. thoes thoes hairless cats are soposed to be one of worst breeds for people with alergies .

your best bet if you have allergies is too look for a siberian cat, they have a slightly oily coat wich helps to keep dander down. however they are long haired and do shed. and they're a rare breed, so expect to drop a lot of mony for one.

I don't know this as a fact, but I've been told by my mom that worked at a vet that cats can have differnt types of coats: fur and hair. Hair cats tend to shed alot more, and fur cats not so much. I have 3 cats and 2 of which shed alot and the other, a long-haired tabby, doesn't seem to shed much at all. But i suppose if dander causes the allergy, this doens't help either!

Either way, I hope you can work something out, there are so many homeless kitties and they are such amazing creatures!!!
