My husband and I are getting prepared for a rawfood lifestyle. I have been reading lots of books and researching dehydrators. I have a few questions for anyone here who is already partaking in a rawfood lifestyle....

Do you find that it is more time consuming at first, but later becomes more efficient when you get to preparing meals? How long does it normally take to get into a good routine?

How do you store your food? What are the best methods that you have tried?

What is the best dehydrator that you have used and why? Do you prefer sun heat over dehydrating machines?

I have found what I think is a great book called "Rawfood", but I am interested in any other books. magazines that you can suggest.

    Thanks.

Hi! I am trying to "go raw" as well. Mainly, I'm trying to incorporate as much raw food into my diet as possible. If I don't get it to 100 percent I won't be mad at myself, but it's something I'm working on.

Personally, I think that buying a dehydrator is kind of a novelty. If the reason that people go raw is to be as similar to a natural diet as possible, then any kind of electronic preparation device as such would be out of the picture, right?

Have you ever been to livingfoods.com? or maybe it's living-foods.com There is lots of info on that site.
Well, good luck, and let us know how things go!

It always starts like that.. ''me and my husband'' always seem to be going on the raw food diets. Why is always ''me and my husband''? Is like some team effort or some thing? Lmao. Secondly, I can't conceive the notion of always eating raw foods all the time. It cant be that healthy. I mean,ya gotta heat something. Eventually you're gonna turn in..
All I can say is good luck..

It is a team effort. We are both trying to live a healthier life. I didn't realize that it should be a solo thing.... *weird*

Rawfood is actually a VERY healthy way to eat. You don't kill all the nutrients in the food by cooking and eating foods in their natural states are easier for the body to digest.

As for the dehydrator thing, I plan to use it to dry herbs, fruits, veggies and nuts. There are a lot of good recipes out there to use with a dehydrator.

The cookbook is called Living Cuisine, by Renee Loux Underkloffer.
It's a wonderful, stupendous cookbook. I actually found it in the library a long time ago, before I had any thoughts about raw foodism. The book truly inspired me to check out the diet. It has a huge section about health, another section describing all (as in every single) raw food, and the back full of recipes.
And the chef is just beautiful.

I just purchased my Excalibur dehydrator and have been planning all the yummy foods we are going to try out first.

I found this great book called "The Living Earth" and it has some great little insights into the raw world. There are not a whole lot of recipes in this book, it's more for people to understand the why and hows more than anything.

heyyyy ive been thinkin about goin raw, or at least a whole lot more raw myself lately!!!

the dehydrator concept seems kindof novelty to me as well... it would seem, that just not messing with your food or heating it all, would be absolutley ideal. but im sure if one were to cleanse and get all that direct life force energy opening oneself up to that intense divine energy, a little pie or cracker or pizza could do nothing to stop that energy once youve gotten it that high. ive eaten tortilla chips and sausa after a fast once and still felt like my body was cleansed and working very close to properly. have you guys looked into fasting and transitioning into raw, or what do you guys plan to do?

what dehydrator did you get? i'm planning on getting one myself right now actually, and found one on amazon, one with an adjustable temp. so its not set over 120 degrees. i found one for just 40 bucks used(compared to a big 140 not) that adjusts from 90-135, and im pretty sure thats all you need to look for right? they look like they eat up power though, hundreds of watts and you have to keep them on for entire nights ideally... and ive been wondering about sun drying and sun tea, i still have a looot of learning left to do.

one thing i learned the other day about it all, is soy is not as healthy as many claim according to raw foodists. apparently, soymilk is cooked, something i never though cuz the cashew nut milks i always made were just blended raw and they were DELICIOUS. but im glad i know now, and im soaking some almonds to turn them from raw to live, and im gonna make some almond milk as soon as their ready, and ill be that much closer to true health and pure nutrition :)

you guys are blessed to know about this diet, and have gotten yourselves opened up to it. theres a whole world of healing and goodness in eating foods with life force, and just a whooole lotta love in em. the body is a temple, and despite almost anything else in our lives, when we treat it as such, were rewarded a LOT. the bodys like life though, unconditionally loving and forgiving(which might not be a good thing), its always working to fix itself..despite the MANY MANY setbacks im sure people lay on it, myself included! i sometimes wonder during fasts, if my bodies alive and conscious itself, but im still working on that idea...

but, if you have any questions about it, theres a whole lotta wooonderful free info on the weband many forums devoted entirely to raw foods, whereas your lucky to find a couple on this board. and im sure they could answer just about annnything you wanna know about it :) good luck with your journey,
    the carrot

btw that sounds like a very cool book. and your right, cooking food(over 120 degrees apparently) changes it molecular makeup entirely, more often than not into something carcinogenic and toxic, which makes more and more sense as i think about it and watch my food and bodies reactions. but ive been meaning to check out natures first law from the library for so long now, im sure it would be more than inspiring to read to get myself into some real foods. raw foods is not as hard or out there as people think, its actually pretty popular, however underground. humanities been doin it since humanities been, until they bit the apple of fire and cooked and processed food and agriculture got booted outta the garden i imagine. i learned the other day, that organic food is like 3-20% more nutritious than conventional crap in addition to being healthier for having no chemicals..but wild food, is like 20% more nutritious than organic food. theres lots of good free raw food in the wild too, dandelion greens are supposed to be excellent for raw foodists. completley packed with vitamins and minerals..and i think vegetables and fruits you grow yourself are that nutritious too, i'd think.. because your using soil thats untapped of its vitamins and minerals essentially. and plus your not farming so you could supply your garden with lots of compost and organic loving goodness. but im sure you know how important organics and growing your own food with love are :) good luck again, and lotsa love for ya :)

Dehydrators don't cook food like a conventional oven does. It basically warms food and dries food for better consumption.

When I get my dehydrator I plan on making cereal with it out of buckwheat groats and oat groats. I plan on making my own milks as well from nuts.

I want to dry a lot of foods such as fruits and veggies and although sun woudl be the best way to dry them, It's not always possible due to weather and what not.

I think choosing the rawfood way that best suits you is the right thing to do... and if it means not using a dehydrator and other tools, than great! I think it's okay for people to decide how they wish to go about their eating styles.

Since I am already use to eating cooked food for many years, I want to go slowly with my transition into raw food. It's not always best to just jump right in without preparing your body.
