500,000+ Aussies hit the streets to protest John Howards labor reforms that he's trying to railroad thru the legislature. These "reforms" take away many of the longstanding workers rights that Aussies have fought for over the decades. It will undo many of the benefits labor enjoys in this quasi socialist society. Workers will lose so many rights, including 4 week vacations and job protections. They'll have to sign new contracts that will give employers total control over employees and remove those important protections they now enjoy. It's good to see the people unite on this, as the unions are spending millions to fight the millions that the government is spending on their propaganda lies. Howard is already reviled by many in Australia for his conservative policies, his unwavering support for Bush and the war in Iraq, his immigration stance, his war on drugs, and many other fucked up policies he's instituted. But still he remains in power.
yeah i went on the march through the city i'm pretty sure that it made no impact, the office workers looked down but the message didn't really get through. as i've said before ideas of liberty and human dignity are as withered as seed on rock.
its sad really. if people were just honest and didn't take advantage of the system thats there to protect them then this wouldnt be needed. really, if you suck at your job then you suck at your job, and they have every right to fire you. its pretty impossible to fire someone these days and they'll manage to fuck you over with law suits and all kinds of shit. people are greedy bastards and they will abuse the system if they think they can get a buck. makes me sick. ive seen it happen so many times. Howard remains in power because majority voted for him. dont you people get it. most people voted for him, most people are not on your side, why are you so surprised.
Actually, a lot agree with him on immigration. Labor/Greens/Demos might like to think there's a dislike of his stance, but look at the Tampa. 95% agreed with him. When it comes to our country, out protection comes first. But these new laws are frightening. So many families and young couples struggle enough, this will see many far more in desperation.
Just had to add that the only reason liberals have been in power for so long is because of their alliance with the national party
i've seen all of howards policies played out in the uk many moons ago, it didn't work out then it won't work out here.
Yes, all Howard has done in bring Thatcherism/Reaganism to Australia. Reaganism didn't work in the US and only took us to war & much further into debt, despite what those who re-write history would have you believe. Reagan's war crimes & crimes against humanity: http://www.rise4news.net/Reagan_War_Crimes.html BTW, Howard may have been elected by a majority, but an overwhelming majority disapprove of him & his policies today.
yes i agree skip. trickster knows more than i about this subject. but then again what trickster thinks won't really matter anyway because she has already told us that she doesn't vote (in another thread). it will be people like me who vote howard out and then she can go a seek asylum in england to bask in the golden sunshine of the english system. as for reagan - he was a senile former actor, his vice president was a former head of the CIA, guess who was pulling the strings!
Voting for Howard or Beasley is trying to find the lesser of 2 evils. I don't think you win regardless of who is in power, someone is always disadvantaged. Life is that way, too many different people living different lives. Although basic needs are the same, they are costly and usually only the rich can afford.
pretend he's talking about australia... I'll show you politics in America. Here it is, right here. 'I think the puppet on the right shares my beliefs.' 'I think the puppet on the left is more to my liking.' 'Hey, wait a minute, there's one guy holding out both puppets!' 'Shut up! Go back to bed, America. Your government is in control. Here's Love Connection. Watch this and get fat and stupid. By the way, keep drinking beer, you fucking morons.' - Bill Hicks
you're kidding right? it's common knowledge that he LIED about the children overboard fiasco. unforuntately, by the time the truth came out he had already used the issue to win that election.
i'm a believer of karmic justice whatever is due to me whatever is due to others is their due whatever you put out will come back to you one way or the other, i have experienced this personally and seen it play out with others. if you are not taught this from an early age it can be a hard lesson to be taught the hard way. if you think treating people badly will bring you kudos and sunshine you are just kidding yourself!
Oh this is about the picture and all that crap. Blah blah, the point is the majority of Aussie did not want to open our borders and let them in. Even if it had been common knowledge that they didn't throw them overboard. In a way that's a side issue. If we had to do it over, the same people would agree with keeping them out. If that sounds racist then i'm positive most of us don't care. Our protection from people that have no passports, identification is paramount. Also, those that were so quick to say they'd have these people in their homes instead of detention centres. Excuse me, but how silly is that? When something happens how quick will they be to blame the government.
