I just wanted to find out, at what age did you start taking your kids camping with you? My twins will be 14 months on Nov. 30, and I would love to take them camping, but I'm not sure that they're old enough. I want to get them in touch with nature at an early age, but at this point, they have only slept in their cribs.
If anyone has taken kids this age camping- what type of things did you take for your baby to sleep on? We have a small fenced in back yard, I thought we might do a trial run there. That way I'm right beside the house if either one of them has a meltdown from sleeping outside. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I want to camp before it gets too cold!

2 toddlers would be interesting--- would you be camping alone or with significate other?
I started camping with a 3 year old and a one year old. We have a HUGE tent that i set up the pack-n-play (portable crib) in. It worked great for the infant---but I think your 2 will be out of this type of crib by next summer....

so bed time will be interesting----quiet snuggle time around the campfire in PJ's and then story time in the tent...it may take a while, new surroundings etc.

Just be flexible---afterall there is no schedule to keep. Be prepared for them to rise with the sun.

    Good luck.

OH! take along a little port-a-potty---trainer potty for quick "I got to go" times. esp. at night.

Thanks for the advice bronte. I didn't even think of the little potty for them. My husband will be going with us, so hopefully everything will run pretty smooth. Our tent isn't big enough to hold a pack n play so this should be very interesting.

I took all 4 of our kids who happen to be 6 months apart down the line due to marriage.....anyways we went camping 2 weeks after our youngest was born which made the other 3 around 2yrs, 19months, and 6 months. We used carseats around the campfire at night and then moved them into beds after they had passed out. It worked well as long as you don't mind mini night owls. Oh and we used a lock on our tent zipper so no one escaped un-noticed.

Two adults - two toddlers - will be fun but you are going to watch them like hawks and be sure to pick a campsite that will give you a good sight line. You do not want to be in a 10 yards and they are gone type of situation. It is going to be a challenge but it sounds like fun. You will for sure find out if your husband and you can work together. My son will be about 15-16 months when it gets warm enough for us to go camping and we plan on taking him with us. We're going to a family nudist resort. Yay!

Hmmmm, not sure on how they would do if they've only slept in their cribs. I would suggest trying to do a trial run maybe. If they fuss, don't bring them inside to their beds though. Just see how long it takes for them to get to sleep in an unfamiliar environment, and how much of a toll it takes on you, if at all, the next day.

I think Sasha was just under a year when we took her camping for the first time. She has always slept in bed with us, so I just laid down with her and put her to sleep in the tent on our bed. She had to do quite a bit of playing and exploring in there to be comfortable enough to crash. We also tired her out with hikes and playing with the other kids that were there with us.

I say that you should start now and each time should porbably get easier as you figure out what works for everyone.

Good luck and have a great time!

parents took me campoing in middle of winter when I was 2 weeks old. they said its easier to camp with an infant than a toddler, as they tend to stay where you put them.
