Anyone have any suggestions? I put this in the old hippie forum because the people in here are experienced and know the real ways of life and living.

You never know if you're a hippie. Because, if you believe you are, then you admit that you are conforming to a stereotype; conforming is anything but the counter culture way. Just be you and let other people call you a hippie; never say you are one.

Alex, when I go to the next Board meeting, I will bribe the right people and get your card back for you, OK?

When you no longer want to be called one. :)

Actually for the young (teenagers when at this forum ha), I feel they do need to want to be called one, because that is the age where we do certain things and join certain groups to find out who we are. We also learn from these others, for good or for bad, but it helps us learn and see.

But you will wear the badge when its time.

And then with sufficient age and life experiences, you will let it go.

Because you won't need it anymore. Because you WILL be one.

    And you will BE one.

No need for proof, not even to you :)

Don't worry about it now. Just build your selfhood and grow.

    Namaste,
    Lotus

My only suggestion to you would be to do what you do, like what you like, and define yourself only as an individual. Then you will be free:)

Other people have been calling me a hippy for ages; because I get high on reality. Rather amusing since I'd listen to anything from Thrash metal to Jethro Tull in my teens (music/clothes etc being part of defining a stereotype). It never occured to me that I might be one and I know that I am not one. I'm at the stage where I let them call me what they want. Mosher, Raver, Goth, Trendy. Any of those generalising categories; they're merely a representation of the labeler's ignorance, not me.
It seems from the posts above that I'm not alone in this sentiment. :)

I never thought of myself as one til my Dad started calling me one. Then I sat and pondered on the subject and said "yup" guess so. My teen daughter used to introduce me to her friends as "my hippie mom". Had to make her stop that. Didn't like being introduced and having my life put under microscope each time she wanted me to meet someone. I'm just me. That's it.

"How do you know if you are a hippie? First you have to define what it is. I never figured that out. I guess I was what you would call a hippy back in the day, but I was really just being myself, still am. OceanByrd said it the way it is, you cannot try to be something, otherwise it defeats the purpose.

Some clues from other people might give you an idea if you are, for want of a better word, a hippy.

Do they look at you as if you are nuts if you say what's on your mind?
Do they think you are a bit strange?
Do they shrink back in fear if you mention legalizing weed?
    Are cops your friends?
Does the establishment wanna make you puke?
Do you try to do something about it?

And on it goes. Just be yourself, don't give in to the capitalist media. get in touch with mother earth. Love your brother and try to be as free as you can in this oppressive society.

Simply say; "I'm Hip!" to everything. That's what we did to get ourselves labeled as "Hip-ees" by the Media back in the daze.

Seriously though... all the replies have some Good damned shit to think on. It's kinda like being an alcoholic... no one else can call you one... you have to comes to terms with yourself and see if You fit the label requirements.

I've come to find that; only ourselves can Name us.

if you have people you consider family, but dont know their real name,
    you might be a hippy

    you might be
if your parents hide you from their friends
    could be
if the store detectives follow you around,
    might be
if you eat your cereal straight from the box,,
    maybe
if you share your pot with your kids,,
if you buy your pot from your kids;)
if a picture of jerry makes you feel kinda fuzzy
    probaly are
if you can stand in front of a sunset and not be seen
    yeppers
if ever for one moment, at any time in your life wondered if you might be a hippy
