I must say desmond dekker has probally got to be my #1 favorite reggae artist of all time. allthough he is not really too widley known, he actually had the first gold album in jamaica. and top ten hit "Isrealites". it became a bit of a novelry song because many in the U.S. could understand the puzzling lyrics which are actually a cry aginst opression and the rough daily conditions faced be many african jamaicains "Get up in the the morning, slaving for bead sir. So that ah every mouth can be fed...poor me, Isralite". Allthough bob marley may have been the first jamaician to hit it big in the US, it was Dekker who broke down the walls.
Some of my favorite songs are 007, keep a cool head, pretty Africa, Licking Stick & Intinsified
i was at a club the other night and it was reggae sunday, so i asked the DJ, some little whiteboy rasta to play some D.D. and he had no idea who i was talking about..! i was ready to take over the tables and have a serious back to schoolin with the kid. anyway, if you havent heard any of this guys stuff yet, dont miss out. he is the G odfather of Reggae
