In case you couldn't figure out what my screen name means a wankel is the engine the mazda RX7 uses (technically called the 13B) and anyway I just bought one recently from a guy near here and a big crate of big kid toys just came in today so I'm really excited WOOHOO... is anyone else around here into rotary engines and/or RX7/8's? I'm on a RX web forum as well but I was just curious what you 'hippies' think of loud screaming fire breathing metal beasts...
I think Wankel engines are nice... something different Did you knwo the German engineer Felix Wankel, who invented this engine, never owned a driving license? He created revolutionary cars and engines although he never drove them himself
I love wankel .. no I really do ! Actually I drive an 8 and I love it.. I had it on order for nearly 6 months before I got it but the wait was worth it. 7 months down the line I still get this silly grin on my face when I push the engine.. like tonight on an empty highway.. I got it up to 125 miles an hour and it was still silky smooth. I'm never selling this one.. I'll buy other cars but to me the 8 is already a classic !
Wankels are awesome. Additionally to the RX-7 & 8, several motorcycles in the 70's and a few snowmobiles also ran rotary engines. I think it is horrible that the technology wasn't persued as it is really a much better model for an engine than a riciprocating engine. But the reciprocating engine has so much R&D behind it that the rotary was nearly abandoned. I want to build a rotary powered, turboed sportsbike. Wheee!
i dont see how theyre a better model, considering nearly every massproduced one has seen massive seal problems along with numerous others. why do you think the wankel company only lasted a few years? the wankel spyder was a very commended car until 90%+ of them where returned on mechanical warrentee as the seals turned to shit. wankel went bankrupt within a few years, and they still havent fixed the problem.. and 125mph is actually quite weak for a car such as a rx8.. my mum had a holden gts that would do 230kph very easily.. in 1969 you could buy a factory dodge daytona that were capable of 350kph (217mph) and had a 1/4mile time of about 13s.. not bad for a 45year old 2tonne car. completely factory and roadworthy
My friend is in love with RX-7s and rotary engines. I'm not too big of a fan because if you aren't mechanically inclined, maintenance is horrid. But they do pack a punch for their small displacement numbers. Personally, my favorite are Zs.240z. 260z, 280z, 280zx, 300zx, and 350z. My friend and I have this sort of rivalyr going,
my mum has a red 350z, very nice car.. 240s are quite nice, as are 260 and 280 as theyre basically the same.. im a pure classics man
I own a 10 anniversary 280zx. I love my baby! Although the oil is starting to burn a lot.haha. i don't care anyways.
I was very disapointed at the upgrade compadability (or lack of showing results) with rotary engines. The rx-7 matched against its rival the supra has very little comparison i think... I would take the supra any day over the rx-7 Rx-7's are nice though
i must admit of the new japanese designs the rx7 would probaly be my favourite, but as far as japs go give me a '74 celica anyday
