How many of you women have ever thought about the birth controls affecting your brest milk or even your child while brest feeding? Has any one mentioned this to their boctor? What wre you told? My husband and I are wondering because I need to start the patch here soon and we aren't sure if the patch will do anything harmful to our son. Like make him unable to have kids and so on and so on. You would think that the doctors would tell you these kinds of things but you know what they tell you jack. Or they don't tell me.

My doctor gave me special pills for breastfeeding take that wont effect your milk. I think they are called POPs.

I was told I wasn't allowed to use the patch while breastfeeding. :( I don't remember the reasons why. I think regular birthcontrol is fine but try asking Brighid or MaggieSug on this kinda question, I'm sure they'd know.

I've heard that the mini pill is ok, but you NEED to let your HCP know that you are nursing.

I wonder daily what affects my milk (well not in the last three weeks cuz my youngest has weaned :( ). I choose NOT to take birth control. We just suck it up and use old fashoned condoms :)

I guess I'm lucky. I didn't start my cycles again till I stopped breastfeeding and felt sure during that time it was safe. When the babies cut back nursing, I just used over the counter contraceptives until they were weaned.

Your so lucky gd. I got my period back at 6 month PP and 4 months pp :( And both were exclusivly breast-fed.

wif, if you interested in going to "natural family planning" route, you could research it a bit for free on the internet. Or you could buy the book "taking charge of your fertility". The method is really simple. You take your temp before you get out of bed every morning and chart that. Right before you ovulate, you temp goes up a bit, so you don't have sex (or do if your trying to concieve). There's more details so you'll need to look into it on your own, but I know that alot of folks use it and are very happy :)

If you don;t want to buy the book, your local LLL group might have one in their library. Mine does.

Or the regular public library for that matter :)

my doctor didn't like me using birth control pills when I did...she was more concerned about me going on them and off them and on them again when I didn't need them anymore which I understood had more to do with my health. In terms of doseage passing through breastmilk she was quite truthful that some did and accepted my decision not to go on a patch or injection but there are still worries about the unknown long term effects on the bub as far as I was led to understand...no sex would be the ultimate answer...oh thats rght...sex is what got everyone into this position in the first place!!! Okay you are going to have to go with condoms!!!

    :p

Okay heres the thing, im allready leery of beeing on birth control anyways, and my doctor hasn't even told me anything about the patch. and I totally breastfeed, I want my son to beable to have kids, and not be sick because some dumb ass doctor didn't tell me the effects that birth control would have on babies that are booby fed.

Did you specifically ask him this? Because if you didn't he may have spaced that detail in his brain. If so, call and ask again or ask your pediatrician.

    I'd look into NFP if I were you. Here's a link: http://familydoctor.org/126.xml

If you want to do prescription birth control, you'll have to ask you doctor SPECIFIC questions on birth control. Doctors are busy, they get paid by how many appointments they have in a day, not the quality of the appointment.

I use the diaphram. Sure it doesn't help with STD"s but it's been effective so far. I know it interrupts the mood a bit. But when you think things are heading in that direction, just say, "I am going to slip into something a little more comfortable" and have the diaphram tucked in near your sexy nighties. It has been working for me and I actually like it. It's not for everybody but it helped get in me comfortable with my body and used to what things are like on the inside. I don't know, it's not for everyone, and it doesn't work if you don't use it.
