I used to have a dog and also a cat but they have both long passed now. I rather miss the presence of an animal around the house so I'm considering getting something new. - I'm just not yet sure of which animal to go for. I am rather keen on the idea of having something unusual and relatively low maintenance. Does anyone have any ideas ??? - Any suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

My friends got a chincilla, because they live in a tiny college-student house. His name is Jet, and he's the cutest little bugger! He's a little smaller than a chihuaha or maltese or some other tiny dog, and very lovable. Only problem is that he likes to get into small spaces, like behind the fridge or under the electric fireplace, and chews a lot. Other than that, I'd say that a chinchilla makes a great pet!

i have 2 iguanas, they don't make any noise, they are vegetarians, you can leave them alone for a weekend, they are hardy and long lived, and they are VERY affectionate! they love to be petted, and will come up on the couch with me. freaks some people out though that i have such huge reptiles hangin out in my house.

    ain't they sweet?

ferrets are so cute. I know they like shiny things and love to play. they can be a little bit of trouble makers though-they like to steal money, remotes, phones, and car keys anything they can get their paws on. But they are adorable. But for low-maintenence i think a snake would be your best bet. they are beautiful and intimidating. for strange you could always go with a scorpion or trantula. that'll definatly get the :O face. lol well happy pet hunting!

and another benefit of reptiles - usually you don't have to pay a pet deposit when you're renting.

I just got my step son a Beta fish, (Bo Bo), for his birthday. Low maintenance for sure, just rinse out his bowl every week with hot water and replace with plain old drinking water from the store. Oh, and feed him once in awhile. They don't eat much, most of 'em die from overfeeding. And he's pretty dang cute.

Many thanks for all the suggestions :) - As of right now I am leaning towards the Chinchilla - they look rather cool - sort of half way between a rabbit and a mouse ! Best of all - I know of no one at all who has ever owned one. - Now I'm off to go check some out !

Chinchillas are cool. Give them sawdust and a bit of hay/straw to play in too, they love the stuff :)

Sugar gliders. Though, they're not very low maintenance.

As soon as I saw your post the first thing that came to my mind was a fenet fox (sp). They are very cute and from what I have read they are very affectionate.

Oh - do you mean the Fennec fox ? The tiny little guys with huge ears ??? - They are certainly cute little fellas ... I don't know if there are many around though... I would preferably get a pet from a rescue centre.

I really really consider you to get a rat. They are loving and intellegent. Please read up on them before considering. But I really adore those fuzzies!

Skunk make good pets and there not hard to take care of, you can buy them de cented but if you have to do it your self its about 140 $ ( around here ) and fixed but other then that the hardest part is making sure they dont get in to cabinets that you keep food or something like that in, which is easy just put one of those little hook latches

Awww...the skunk is cute...but there are not even any wild ones here in Newfoundland!

I say get a rat.Rats are clean, very smart (can be trained almost anything a dog can),VERY affectionate and loving, bond with humans and are playful...I am addicted to them! You wouldn't understand unless you owned one! They are reletivly low maintanance...just need to be kept stimulated and amused...rats hate to be bored!

Mice make pretty good pets too...they just smell really bad, especially the males. But they are friendly little guys too, cheap and easy to care for...
