Hey guys i have a serious query i need help with! My bf got back from being overseas for two months on wednesday, and ive been on the pill for approx 6 months so we did the deed (so to speak), but because i m on the pill didnt use a condom. The next day, i went to the doctor with a sore throat, swollen glands etc ( that i'd had for the last week) and he put me on antibiotics, whioch i was told to start on Thursday night. Now, i know that antibiotics negate the effect of the pill, but i was wondering if there was any chance of me becoming pregnant from having unprotected sex on wednesday night and taking the antibiotics on thursday night? I asked my dr and his response was "i dont know, ill see you next week for a pap smear", so he really wasnt much help. If you can help me please do i am really beginning to drive myself crazy with this! any help is really really appreciated!! thanks xxx ash
aren't doctors just the greatest, i can't believe he answered you like that. what a jerk. can you get a second opinion? maybe you could look up your question on google. i research so much on google for medical problems. good luck, it really wasn't unprotected sex as you had used birth control and you didn't know you were going to get sick. so you were responsible. hopefully the medication didn't effect the birth control. try to relax and not worry about it. maybe just use condoms until the medication for your illness is out of your system. hippiewise
Try finding your prescription on Google. Once you do, look for info on when it affects the sperm. That should give you an idea. Perhaps it's time to go doctor shopping? There really are some good ones out there. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like yours can be counted in that number. Good luck. OH, wait a minit!! Is your pill one that stops ovulation? As opposed to a spermicide (don't even know if pills are spermicidal). I'm thinking that pills stop ovulation (but, as is obvious, I'm no expert). In that case, I don't see how the introduction of an antibiotic after the fact could in any way affect the pill's action. But look it up anyway!!
I don't believe so. Sperm can live for a little while in the vagina, but I doubt it would be long enough for the antibiotics to affect how effective your pill is. I mean, I would go back to the doc for a pap or a pregnancy test, or do a preg test at home in a couple weeks just to be sure (they aren't expensive after all) but the chances are slim
What about calling somewhere like planned parenthood and asking one of their docs? I mean, if you can expect to get a knowledgeable answer anywhere, it seems like that would be the place (maybe your general practitioner doc never cared to learn any more than the basic statement that antibiotics affect pill effeciveness). And I highly agree with above posters that it's time to go doctor shopping. If he didn't know, it was his job to look it up or ask a colleague. General practitioners can't be experts in everything, so I wouldn't fault my doc for not knowing, but any doc who cares about the patient would look it up. If he books himself too busy to take the time, he probably doesn't care all that much about any individual patient.
thanks guys i looked it up - im on Levlen ED if anyone knows anything else about it - ill post what i found on here coz im not 100% on what it means :& LEVLEN ED is a combined oral contraceptive (often called "the Pill"). Each small hormonal tablet contains a small amount of two different female hormones. These are levonorgestrel (a progestogen) and ethinylestradiol (an estrogen). Because of the small amount of hormones, LEVLEN ED is considered a low-dose combined oral contraceptive preparation. LEVLEN ED also contains 7 large white non-hormonal tablets that do not contain any active ingredients. Combined oral contraceptive Pills, such as LEVLEN ED, provide one of the most effective reversible methods of contraception known. Usually, when LEVLEN ED is taken according to the instructions, the egg cells (normally released by the ovary each month) are prevented from maturing to the point where they can be fertilised. In addition, the cervical mucus remains thick, so it is more difficult for a man's sperm to enter the womb. Also, the lining of the womb is not prepared sufficiently for a fertilised egg to grow in (http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/consumers/cmi/l/levlen.htm) So from what the site said about it, does this mean i should b ok or what coz yes im a bit thick :& I asked the pharmasist when i picked it up - he said he wasnt 100% sure but it should be ok, but im still stressin a lil bit. (as can be expected i guess! =S ) When the doc answered me like that, we got out of the office and my bf(who came in wit me) said straight away "thats it we're getting a new quack" lol so ive got reccommendations from one of my friedns so im going to go see her doc when i can actually get in to her - shes really booked up! Anyway guys thank you so much 4 the help i really appreciate it xxx ash
you might needed to have taken another type of pil as well. but it was 24 hrs later when you started the antiboitics so you might be ok. The only sure way to tell is by doing a test. And im pretty sure that any antiboitic takes about 3 days to work so you should have been covered by your pill for a couple of days - if thats makes sense i know what i mean lol. You should be fine though
