I was reading somewhere n it says that hippies re-name themselves n i was wondering what the deal was with that? why would they n do they still?n hows it done?
I believe they thought of names as societys labels on people so they changed them to something to do with nature or likewise, could be wrong though. As for changing your name i'm pretty sure you can do that in a court or some shit like that or just self title yourself with a different name from now on but then you got the health cards and stuff to worry about, thats society for ya .
i dont know about hippies renaming themselves.. but i know you can go to your local courthouse and change your name. i think you can change your last name too if you really want. .. to anything you want! i used to hate my full first name, so my dad was going to take me when i was 10 down to get it changed.. but I'm a lazy girl and never went.
I think its like.. Kind of what i do.. is when i meet rainbows and stuff, i giv ethem a name i dig at the time... one that isnt given to you.. one that you choose... and also spirit names are groovy.. But when im filling out papers... its what destiny chose as my name..
I'm kinda with Eric on this one. I just pass around different names for myself, whatever feels appropriate at that point in my life. Of course, for legal documents I use my given name... But I rarely introduce myself as "Meg"
more like nicknames. You did it when yopu chose a screen name here: this is the association we will have with you as Hippie Chick rather than an Edna, a Tiffany, a Caroline. See? druminmama: what image does that leave? Also done for culural reasons: Mary Johnson, African American woman who wants to reconnect with some undefined African past becomes Watanago Nykubangi. No way on earth for today's slave descendants to know where home is, and as an adpotee with few records , I completely understand that , well pain is not the right word, maybe nagging question and sense of loss is better. That disconnect could be the worst legacy of enslavement this far after. Peter Jones became Krishnananda Das in ISKON. Jill Mitchell became Hummingbird when she got off the Greyhound bus to be On the Bus. Owsley Stanley became Bear because of his attitude. Ron McKernan= Pigpen because of his bathing habits or lack thereof. All in how we or someone else sees us.
I've been told it's because they've went through a rebirth of spirit which I can totally understand after having read about and taken LSD for the first time, what a surge of revelations Love
Guess it could be any mix of those reasons. I renamed myself. Yes it was done to be hippy, found the name on a list of 'hippy names'. Really appreciated the symbolism of rebirth. Creating my own identity rather than the one parents/society dictate. Onomastics is a hobby of mine, and I never much liked my given name, so it was pretty inevitable. Never really profess to be a hippy, but still keep the name. It just has the right resonace and feels like mine. My middle name isn't specifically hippy, is distinctly pagan though. At the moment I just use it online and as a kind of nickname. Am phasing it into the rest of my life, and will change it by deed poll (legal process) around my 21st birthday (next October).
I like the idea of giving myself an other name ... But i don't what to take, so i am using my real name which is Antoine Alexis (even if it's my birth certificate name, people just call me Antoine ..)
We were part of a global street-theatre back then. We kinda saw ourselve as something a-kin to performance-artists. Creating a whole new un-rehearsed scene. So many of us just naturally gave ourselves and each other symbolic names. Felt like the natural thing to do at the time, and I think probably at least half of us had make up handles at one time or another. I remember for a while I went by the handle of 'Brother Buzz'. This name resonated with me because, not only did 'Buzz' have its usual canibus connection, but also when I was a little kid there was a tv show with a puppet bee that used to buzz around this deep forest and have little inter-actions with various forest friends. Can't remember the name of the show, I haven't seen it since '62?
my name was changed a year or so ago. my freyand rayne told me about how i am a harmonious person, so she started calling me harmony and then eventually everyone started calling me by that name. it is on the list of hippie names, but i didn't change it because of that. i suppose it just has a more meaningful thought behind it...something that i stand for moreso than my real name.
I've wanted to change my legal name to my nick name; but never got around to it because of being unsure what legal complications would arise...
i havent changed my name , i have a nickname - obviously , but i often write a different name on stuff or if a random person in the street asks me what my name is i will say Dante - cos i once signed a mailing list at a gig for a band and i put down the lead singers name and they never realised (obviously not a fan) - she just asked me where i was from! peace Dante Gizzy aka Haz xoxo
