Gettin' dreads, and...

I'm white, and though I hesitate to call myself a Rasta (because I am also very into eastern philosophies) I believe very strongly in most of the philosophies and beliefs of RastafarI. I'm currently letting my hair dread, so I haven't combed my hair in about 2 and a half months, which i know isnt that long. I have a few beginning dreads on the sides, and one huge knot in the back. I know it's common for this to happen in the back, seeing as people often sleep on that part of their head. I've heard that this knot will eventually seperate, but recently it only seems to be getting tighter. I've read posts on other forums from people who ripped their knotted hair into dreads. I know that letting the dreads form naturally, or of Jah's accord, is important, and ripping doesn't seem to follow this. I'm not sure what to do. Do I just have to give it time, or should i separate this knot myself?

 

You should really just go to www.knottyboy.com and follow their method, it's the way I'ev always done it (before I heard about knottyboy). What you have is a rats nest, it's not going to seperate, it's going to be a huge pad of dread. Which is fine really, because it's really not about being specific fashionable dreads, it's about not being a baldhead. You can wash your hair, and should wash your hair. Jamaicans have used aloe for dread tightening for ages, so you can use that too if you want.

Do not use chemical products, try to find hemp shampoos or use knotty boys bar shampoo, it's wonderful and tightens greatly.

 

Its up to you brother. Like Stalkz said it not about the fashion. I think you could just rip that puppy apart, but thats me. I think that after awhile it would form from a knot into a nice round dread, but even if it doesnt that just makes it one of a kind and thats the great thing about dreads, they are all different.

yeah that big know will end up one huge dread unless ya get to it soon.............. i'd rip it! i think the biggest concern is not putting anything un-natural in it, no chemicals etc............

Call yourself Rasta if you like, if you feel it. Cause only "half the story has ever been told" (hah hah ha Bob said that you know) but what him as a Rasta mean is the other half is written in each Rasta heart. Each Rasta take half the truth (Bible, Pibby, Kebra Nagast) and use it to decifer the part written in they heart.

Not to metion many eastern truth seekers dred. Locs is for the spiritual man the the political man for what is politics but the spirit of a man concerned for the welfare of his brother.

The next point is ripping your mat of hair, Jah has provided your loc and it is now up to you to care for it as your heart tells you best.

 

just a warning - dont believe everything you read from one website about dreads. especially if that site sells ANYTHING dread-related. there's a good chance that they're spinning lies just to sell their shit (*cough*dreadheadHQ*cough*). i'm referring to others, too, but that's just an example.


in my opinion, the less you do to your hair, the better off it will be. after trying to make them do certain things, or grow a certain way and seeing every attempt fail (especially months after you've done something - it will undo itself eventually and be worse off than it was before). go ahead and rip some apart if you feel like it, but that's the only action i'd recommed - something passive like that. i highly recommend against backcombing or anything else that will "make" locks.

so, enjoy the process! (because that's what dreads essentially are. they are not an achieved thing but a process of becoming)

 

i'm in the same boat as you. 16, white, and wanting to become a rastafarian. i know that people will always question why a white person is a rasta but i agree with the beliefs of rastas and want to become a part of the community.

Dreading is common among Saivite Hindu sadhus who grow dreads to symbolize that they are not concerned with the things of this world but are concerned with higher realms. Dreading is a sign of renunciation. Dreadlocks may have even originated from the Saivites.

 

You say that like saying I am in this religion has somehow changed me into a better person. NO. To be the person you want to be takes action by you and what peace_sells is seemingly saying is that those actions don't happen because of a so-called religion, it occurs because that is the essence of that persons being.

We could even back up further and look at the change a person makes in personality depending on what so-called religion they choose to be a part of, like getting pregnant and not having an abortion even though they were unmarried and way too young to be having sex to begin with but due to their religious affiliation. But wait, that was still their choice from beginning to end. If Christianity was a religion and not a state of mind then a true Christian would not get into such a situation to begin with right, because religion is infallable and states of mind are the reason why religion exists. Uh Uh.

Rastafarian or not anyone can have the feelings and actions that might happen to go hand in hand with a belief system years before they even know such a system existed and why could they not claim that they have been such all along when they in fact know that is how they have lived.

That is like me my self knowing that even before I had a clue about Buddha, I have been living a life quite similar to that of a practicing Buddhist. Personally I see no point in someone calling them selves part of a religion but that is a whole other topic that I am sure is going on somewhere in this massive forum.

 

Quite clearly it is you that knows nothing about Rasta. Rasta is not a religion because A) There are no priests, bishops and no single leader IE the pope other then the god himself Haile Selassie B) There are no set Rastafari churches. Taking that into account and also the fact that Rasta get quite offended when you refer to their beliefs as a religion how can you possibly say that it is?

I agree with you that the person whom you were referring to is indeed an ill educated person when it comes to Rastafari, i mean, you cant just suddenly turn round and say 'im Rasta now', and i believe everyone has the ability to become Rasta, but i dont believe 'anyone can be a Rasta' because that then says that no matter what you believe, no matter which parts of Rasta you dont agree with, you can still call yourself one. which is idiotic. Rasta is about unity and equality, taken from the words and teachings of Rastafari himself. If you do not follow all of Rastafari's teachings, if you dont believe Jah Rastafari Haile Selassie is god, if you go out getting drunk all the time but then have super strong opinions of what you feel is right or wrong therefore its ok........you are NOT Rasta.

Its like claiming Buddhism is a religion and if you are into it you will attain enlightenment when Buddha him self would tell you not to worship him but worship the oneness of the life spirit and see that the light already shines in you, but they keep on looking like there is something to be changed and all there is to know is the feeling, the seeing and then you know how to see and be grateful and you can truly pass on the gift that God gave you.

HIM was a Christian and very well educated in the scriptures, as was Marcus Garvey. If you wish to follow the wording of HIM, you would have to approach it orthodox style. If Rastafari has nothing to do with religion, why am I reading a chapter a day?

Rastafari has nothing to do with religion, you read a chapter a day from the book of God, not the book of religion.

I am Rastafari, and as such, i know that Christ is God, God is Jah, and Jah is Christ. One Love, One Heart, One God.

More specific HE is the GOD of Abraham, Isac and Yakob, recognised by the torah, bible and the koran.
To get back to the point is H.I.M. GOD?
Maybe we should ask Haile Selassie if he is GOD? Do you remember the interview H.I.M. gave on the train in Canada? In that he did not only denie it, he also warned Rastafari about dieties (how do you spell that anyway?). Truly you do not mean to convince me Yeshua was baring false witness?

This is about definition, I'll give a definition:
* Religion - something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience
* Get Religion - to resolve to mend one's errant ways

I believe you would be able to identify with both statements

them sadhus and their philosophy for taking dreads has been way more influential on me than rastafari has been. for me too dreads are a symbol and a way to remember myself of how i wish to approach life. not to pursue a path in life with mediocre goals, concerned with status and material accumulation, but higher goals of understanding and awareness. of course those mediocre paths in life are for a great deal responsible that the babylonian world works the way it works. and so my inspiration for dreads become a fight against babylon too and thus those two ways are connected as everything eventually is.
