How much do they cost? Roughly the same as a guitar? More, less? I'd like to learn, and I'm thinking of asking my parents to get me one for Chanukkah. But I don't want to ask my parents for something that'll cost much more than $250. I don't need something superfancy, just something I can learn on.

I'd call a pawn shop. $250 sounds like more than enough.

Be ready to be the butt of many jokes (some of them might even be funny). Banjo players are the only musicians mocked more than drummers.

Pete Seeger's advise about learning the banjo; "Don't practice, just play a lot."

Meh, people can mock me all they want. I like the banjo. Odd, because I'm not a particular fan of country or bluegrass, but I always just liked the instrument.

Like Steve Martin says, you just can't play a sad song on the banjo. It always comes out cheerful.

You can get a banjo for $250. It really depends on what quality you want. A low-priced but good quality banjo for NEAR that amount is the Deering Goodtime, or Gold Tone CC100R or CC100... but they are more like 100 or 150 more dollars.. Look on Ebay... look around most anywhere you can to try and find a deal, but be careful about what kind you get, they do make alot of cheap banjos that aren't worth much more than firewood.

i've got the same washburn from musician's friend...it's alright...it's good to learn on but it's not very loud and i have to tune it alot...but i've definitely been able to learn on it fast...banjo is a really fun instrument.it's also not as hard as it looks.

Me? Well, I don't know a whole song yet... I'm really weird when I learn instruments.. I don't have the patience to learn a whole song, I just learn bits and pieces and I learn the basic chords and such and I usually just improvise and play by myself.. but I have lot's of fun doin it.

Who knows? But I'm already a halfway decent guitar player, which I'm hoping will serve as an advantage.

Though I'm finding out with learning the piano that it's actually easier to try to learn songs (basic, at first) from day one than to just do piano exercises for a half hour every day.

I have a job now (Filene's. Retail again... *sigh*), so I think I'm going to save my money for the banjo and ask for something else for Chanukkah.

I'm also thinking violin... It might be easier to find lessons for that. But banjo might be more fun... Meh, I'll figure that out when I get the money saved.

I'm in Alabama and I don't even know that many people who play the banjo around here much less give any lessons...wierd, we are the center of the redneck population and I don't know any of them who play banjo.

Seriously? I know of like 12 people who play banjos in my town.... Well, I really started to find out if peopled played the banjo when I got one... Suddenly everyone knew someone who played... It's like a big secret or something and when you get a banjo then they let you in.. Very Strange.
