I never trusted pay pal myself. Then again, I never trust much of anything. I don’t even use the library anymore. I never sign up for those “discount” cards that various venders have. I don’t want people tracking my purchases! I have nothing to hide, it is just that I like my privacy. It is all about big brother and I am afraid that we have not scene the worst of it yet.

I'm just a little uncomfortable with the idea of giving some company access to my bank account. And I know you can also direct it to your credit card, but even if I had one, I still would be uncomfortable with the idea. That's kind of why I rarely buy things online unless I can write a check.

I don't trust paypal, either. What happened with that big lawsuit against them awhile back? I can't even remember what they had done wrong, but I'm sure they won in the end.

I use PayPal, because I collect toys and use Ebay a lot.

However, now that I heard this I am going to close my account with PP.

    What a bunch of assholes.

What kind? I collect anything from the 80s, especially Transformers, Jem, and My Little Pony. I also collect any kind of doll and stuffed animal, and I collect Sagwa toys.

I can’t remember what the lawsuit was about either. However I don’t think they won. I seem to remember that they settled which most likely included a confidentiality agreement. Anyway, I will have to look it up.

I would not trust any company that can put money into or take money out of my account with out my permission.

If anyone HAS to use pay pal I would suggest that you open an account at another bank and just put a little bit of money in it. Just what you need to buy things on line. That way you do not put all your money at risk.

Paypal paid out money to some of its users as part of that lawsuit. I know a couple friends of mine who got a small amount of money from it.

It's better to start up a secondary bank account if you need it for Paypal and keep only the minimum balance that you need.

Ebay actually started up as a trading place for toys and beanie babies. Now it has grown into this colossal thing. The atmosphere at Ebay isn't as friendly as it was ten years ago when they were more of a hobbyist site. There's tons of rules on Ebay now that weren't there before. It was a lot looser back in the 90s.

..using one of those 'pre-paid' credit cards you can get at the convenience store is pretty simplistic. There's a fee to activate it but after that you just put the amount for what you want to buy on it, buy it, all the money's gone, no bank account.

But isn't this more about the small buisiness owner having to deal with having their account frozen by paypal, money owed to them for products purchased through a website? Apparently the WOD's tentacles are many and spreading most insidiously.

Yes, that is a problem as well. Pay pal can freeze peoples bank accounts without any warning and there is little the merchant can do about it. Since most people trading on e-bay etc are small business, very few would have the resources to mount a legal battle against pay pal.

An option for the small business might be to hold merchandise until they receive the money from pay pal. Then, transfer that money into another account (that pay pal does not have access to). Then ship the merchandise. It is not a perfect solution and I am not even sure if it would work.

Of course the best option would be to not use pay pal at all!

Me,too! I love all toys, but I mainly collect toys from the 80's. I can't believe you remember Jem! Do you have the Jem doll with the light up earrings? I have one of the Misfit dolls. I collect alot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,He-Man and She-Ra,Barbies,and Strawberry Shortcake. I like bedsheets and lunch boxes, too. Pretty well anything from the 80's is great.

Well I have never really looked into pay pal because I just did not trust them from the beginning. Since this thread started I researched it a little bit and now there is no way I would ever use pay-pal.

There is an entire forum of pay pal horror stories at www.paypalsucks.com

Well, I get why they would ban selling pot, because that gives them the liability. However, banning selling of paraphenelia? WTF? You can buy bongs in places like the Atlantic City boardwalk, completely legal. I trust pay pal enough because I don't use it for anything except buying and selling stuff like scarves on Ebay. You'd have to be several kinds of stupid to sell anything illegal on it, though. Plus, if you click that little agreement form then you're bound to anything it says, whether it's fair or not. People really should read it more often...

I completely agree with you. Anyone who would try to buy or sell anything illegal using pay pal, pretty much deserves what they get. I am not interested or concerned about illegal activities. My concern is that people who have done nothing wrong were not simply banned. Their bank accounts were frozen and their money was confiscated by pay pal.

So let me get this straight...

You guys are pissed off at PayPal because they refuse to serve as the middleman in cash transactions that involve the buying and selling of illegal goods?

    Wow. Just wow.

And yes, even though they may be legal in your town, Bongs and Pipes are illegal in many places.

No that is not what we are saying at all. At least it is not what I am concerned about.

If you go to www.paypalsucks.com you will read stories of people who had their bank accounts emptied for perfectly legal transactions. (Having nothing to do with drugs)

As for what is legal or illegal, I am concerned that paypal has made its self the sole arbitrator of fact in these cases. There is no way to appeal their decision or get your money back unless you are wealthy enough to hire an attorney and sue them.

If paypal questions some transaction they don’t report you to the police so the police can conduct an investigation of you activities, give you an opportunity to defend yourself, or provide you with any right to due process. The simply seize your money(including funds that have nothing to do with the “questionable transaction”) and keep it. That is what I object to and why I would never use pay pal.
